A popular sidearm for bushrangers in the 1850s and 1860s was the pepperbox pistol (named for its resemblance to a pepper mill). There were many variations, like this American Allen and Thurber model, that were used almost exclusively as domestic weapons. The pepperbox was a six chambered revolver and extremely effective for fighting compared to the firelock pistols more common at the time. It gradually became less popular as the colt revolvers became more commonplace.
