ALLEGHNEY WEST DETOUR: STEEL PRESERVE: 2100 block/Allegheny: Alley West is my old backyard and I have passed by what I now know is the Steel Heddle Manufacturing Complex numerous times, but my new daily commute requires me to take in the vastness of the former manufacturer of textile loom accessories from the cool vantage point of the Regional Rail station at 22nd/Allegheny. Site actually consists of four buildings: a plant, main office, chrome plating building, and lumber storage and garage, according to the invaluable Hidden City. Some form of business was conducted here at least until 1983. Industrial zoning (L-1), 257K SF of improved space, lot 75K SF. Alley West seriously suffers because of outmoded former industrial buildings in limbo. Maybe there should be a movement to rezone this corridor in an attempt to give it new life? The setting is seemingly right: Building boom. Trend for large North Philly adaptive reuse projects. Transit (Regional Rail, subway, buses nearby). Close to Temple medical campus.
