Curated by @hilton.als, 'Alice Neel, Uptown' is on view at DZ NY 19th Street through April 22.
The exhibition features portraits made during Neel's five decades living and working in Spanish Harlem and the Upper West Side. Forthright, intimate, and at times humorous, the paintings overtly and quietly engaged with political and social issues.
Als has brought together a selection of Neel's works depicting African Americans, Latinos, Asians, and other people of color, highlighting the innate diversity of her approach to portraiture. He writes in the accompanying @davidzwirnerbooks catalogue: "What fascinated her was the breadth of humanity that she encountered." #AliceNeel #HiltonAls
