Choosing a Top/Favourite 9 photos of music acts I've seen/shot this year was always going to be tough, so I've broken it down into female and male. Girls first because there have been some truly kick arse performers in the gender this year and the ones I've chosen all exemplify that or hold a special place in my life. First 3-Thando, Melbourne rnb Queen, killer vocalist, gorgeous human and friend, set to blitz the scene in 2018 (she won my most seen musical act of the year at 12 gigs across town).Clare Bowen, ethereal, enchanting Aussie songstress with worldwide fame as Scarlett O'Connor in US tv's Nashville. One of the humblest, sweetest, most genuine and giving souls I have had the pleasure to know, who shone bright on the Hamer Hall stage mid year on her Australian tour.Carla Troiano, lead singer for Melbourne soul/funk band Mayfield and one of the hardest working women I know. Shooting her band's debut album launch gig this year was one of my greatest pleasures.Second 3-Vera Blue who produced some spectacular Sell Out shows around her debut album Perennial that were visually and vocally stunning. Ella Hooper fronting her reformed, seminal 90's rock band Killing Heidi, in what started as a series of one off shows earlier in the year that proved so popular they took it on a bigger tour and smashed it in venues across the country. Jack River, one of a group of young up and coming female artists, across a range of genres, who impressed the hell out of me in their live shows, but in her case particularly because she was the creative force behind Electric Lady -a collective of her peers she brought together for two special shows and for her support slot on one of the epic Midnight Oil tour shows.Last 3-Ali Barter, Ecca Vandal and Bec Sandridge, rock, indie/alt/rap/hip/hop,pop/punk. Three dynamic performers who own their stage, backed by killer bands and all of whom put out great releases that resonated with Triple J and it's listeners.
I probably saw at least another dozen great local female acts, plus internationals London Grammar fronted by Hannah Reid, Bishop Briggs (aka Sarah McLaughlin and Slotface (fronted by Haley Shae) who killed it live here on tour. 👍
