I don’t have a permanent yard of my own just yet so thankfully my folks are willing to let me fill up their yard with native goodies like another rarity in the federally threatened Virginia spiraea (Spiraea virginiana) [G2/S1]. I received this from a friend last year who is permitted to propagate/cultivate this and other rare plants. A rabbit ate it pretty much down to the ground over the winter so this spring I caged it initially and it’s really bounced back! Actually, I think the rabbit did me and it a favor. This shrub is endemic to the southern Appalachians and occurs in gravel bars/scours along small-medium waterways. Very rhizomatous and able to come back from floods or rabbits! I hope mine will flower in the next couple years. It’s known from a single waterway in Ohio, and actually where my plant came from. Home grown Ohio genetics!

Seven years ago I planted a rhizome of the rare and unusual Virginia mallow (Sida hermaphrodita) [G3/S3] in my parent’s backyard. Every year it makes for a fun plant to watch grow, especially in May when the ascending stalks and leaves look their best. It’s best known from the Ohio River valley in OH, WV, and KY and some scattered waterways further east. While globally rare and an imperiled species overall, it can be locally common in the right spots, including where I collected it along the Ohio River in Adams Co. I keep mine controlled to a single clump as it can take over if happy and left alone and is a very fast grower. It blooms from late June through August with clusters of white hibiscus-like flowers that hummingbirds love; something I never read in literature but have observed countless times in the backyard. It’s a fascinating yard plant to have and very easy to grow. My plants usually top out at 10-12’ tall by early fall and makes for a fun conversation piece. You may get accused of blatantly growing marijuana to the untrained eye though haha!

Ah, it feels great getting my hands in the peat! I spent two hours this evening officially “opening” my bog garden for the season. It’s already doing wonderfully, especially my grass pink orchids (Calopogon tuberosus), which will be blooming by the dozens in a few weeks. My rose pogonia orchids (Pogonia ophioglossoides) have one bloomer but two buds! I love watching this garden grow and improve as time goes by. I’ve had quite a bit of luck thus far!

Another roadside occurrence in the Hocking Hills that never fails to surprise me is a small colony of the scarlet paintbrush (Castilleja coccinea). I remember the first time I drove by the site nearly a decade ago and couldn’t believe my eyes. I thought I was just seeing things but upon exploring the roadside bank it was clear my eye didn’t deceive me. Scarlet paintbrush is uncommon to begin with in Ohio and associated with open prairie/barrens/glade habitats but it still persists on this roadside bank in a massive sea of forest in the Hocking Hills. I’m unsure how it came to be there as there’s not really any other prairie-like associates with it but in the end who cares ha. Always a joy to see!

I always enjoy one particular stretch of road near the Hocking Hills this time of year for its large display of cow parsnip (Heracleum maximum). This large member of the carrot family (Apiaceae) and its conspicuous white umbers of flowers really stand out in the dappled shade of the forest and road margins. Don’t confuse this with the invasive and dangerous giant hogweed (H. mantegazzianum) though! They do look similar but can be told apart in a number of key ways. Cow parsnip is smaller in all regards, blooms earlier (May-June), and has a thinner stem that is all-green. Giant hogweed is 7-15’ tall and has much wider leaves/flower umbels, blooms later (end of June-July), and its thick stems are splotched with reddish-purple. Giant hogweed is known from a few places in Ohio but isn’t very common at all yet so should be a rare encounter and hopefully stay that way! Giant hogweed is really only dangerous if your skin gets exposed to its sap/juices and then exposed to sunlight. It’s not something to take lightly but also not going to automatically “get” if you come across it haha.

I decided to cap off a long day of work and unwind with a visit to see an albino flowered pink lady’s slipper (Cypripedium acaule) among dozens and dozens of its typical colored kin. The wonders of the Hocking Hills never fail to leave me breathless and it was a perfect way to end my day.

Early this morning I was driving out to the Hocking Hills to lead a hike for the Appalachia Ohio Alliance when I came across and helped five box turtles cross the road. It was just one after another! Included was this adorable little fella, which was about the smallest box turtle I’ve ever found. I always stop to help if the road allows for it. Luckily, it was early morning and on straightaways that allowed for easy stops. So cute!

You know it's monitoring/surveying season for the federally endangered running buffalo clover (Trifolium stoloniferum) [G3/S3] when your back and knees ache something fierce at the end of the day. This species was thought lost and considered extinct up until its rediscovery in West Virginia back in the mid 80's. Since then it's been found in a handful of Midwestern states, including Ohio where we've continued to, thankfully, find more and more. Here in the East, clover is usually thought of as a non-native, obnoxious weed found along the road and in waste places, but this is a conservative species that requires a strict disturbance regime to stick around but can persist in the seed bank for a long, long time. It gets its name by its running stolons that root and create 'new' plants and the belief the old bison trails allowed for the perfect habitat. It's a gorgeous species with large creamy flowers atop a pair of oppositely arranged leaves. As much as I love the stuff I'll be sick of it by end of next week. So many sites to survey and rooted crowns to flag/count... #Nature #NatureLovers #NatureGram #NaturePhotography #PlantID #IGNature #PlantsOfInstagram #InstaPlant #InstaFlower #InstaBotany #InstaNature #Botany #Wildflowers #Clover #Trifolium #RunningBuffaloClover #FederallyEndangered #RarePlant #NativePlants #Ecology #Ohio #OhioNature #OhioWildflowers #OhioBotany #OhioFlora #TheBuckeyeBotanist #ALGibson

I wanted to take a moment to thank each and every one of you: my followers. I recently eclipsed 10,000 followers and to be honest it’s blown my mind. When I started this IG account nearly three years ago I just wanted an easy place to share my passion for the botanical world and the interesting plants and places I’m fortunate to encounter with my job and travels. I never expected many to find it all that interesting, let alone thousands of you. I’m just a plant geek who needed an outlet! I write (more like ‘wrote’ these days) a popular nature blog for years but the last few I just haven’t had the time/energy to post much and IG became the perfect way to tell and share my experiences more efficiently. Instagram’s nature and botany community is huge and there’s so many incredibly talented and knowledgeable folks out there and to have so many find me and stick around means a lot. You folks keep my fire burning bright and always on the hunt for something new or rare to share on here or find a new way to look at something familiar. I know I can go overboard with the writing (cough, like right now, cough) and I especially appreciate those that get this far in my captions. I find the plant world fascinating and want to try and get some of you to agree and learn a thing or two along with pretty photos. Best is the other botanists and nature lovers I’ve gotten to know on here! It’s inspiring to see we’re not alone out there. I hope to keep doing this for the foreseeable future and hope y’all will stick around! THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH! I wouldn’t be the Buckeye Botanist without you :) #Nature #NatureGram #NatureLovers #NaturePhotography #IGNature #InstaNature #InstaPlant #PlantsOfInstagram #InstaOrchid #PlantID #PlantPorn #Wildflower #Orchid #Orchidaceae #LadysSlipper #Cypripedium #Ecology #RarePlant #Biodiversity #Thuja #Woodland #Botany #Ohio #OhioOrchids #OhioNature #OhioWildflowers #ALGibson #TheBuckeyeBotanist

Here’s a quick throwback to a couple weeks ago during my visit to the botanical paradise of the Bibb County Glades. The Alabama pinkroot (Spigelia alabamensis) [G1/S1] is perhaps the glade’s most famous denizen, as it’s only found in a handful of Ketona dolostone barrens and that’s it worldwide. It looks like a gentian but is in the related Loganiaceae, a sister family of Gentianaceae. Pinkroot only flowers in full sun in the latter part of the day and I was rather surprised to find some opening up. Would love to see this one again later in the year with more plants in better flower. P.S. you may have seen this wildflower on the side of U-Haul trucks recently!

Dwarf ginseng (Panax trifolius) is about the cutest thing to grace select cool, shaded forest floors this time of year. It curiously still occurs in a disjunct fashion in the Hocking Hills region of southeast Ohio and something I can’t help but seek out each spring.

Here’s a wildflower that I never see get any photographic attention and I’m not sure why. Heck, I’m curious how many folks on here know or have seen this species. Meehan’s mint (Meehania cordata) is the sole member of its genus in North America and restricted to the central Appalachians, especially the Allegheny Plateau region. It occurs in cool, shaded, moist sites especially near small streams and occurs sparingly in Ohio’s southeastern-most counties. About the only place I ever consistently see it is cool hollows in the Hocking Hills. It creeps along the ground and can form attractive colonies that bloom from May into June.

All good things must come to an end and at an end is my look back on the Florida panhandle. The panhandle is a masterpiece of botanical perfection and I’m still dizzy from the diversity I encountered and the dozens and dozens of life species. I hope you enjoyed vicariously following along and learned a thing or three along with me. I have more I could share and probably will at another time but for now it’s back to our regularly scheduled Ohio flora program. In about two months I will be going on an epic week long botanizing loop around the entirety of Lake Superior with some friends. The things I hope to see make me salivate even now. Always nice to countdown to the next adventure!

While most of eastern North America makes due with a single species of pawpaw (Asimina), Florida is a hotbed of diversity with 8+ species of the tropical-like trees. I was most pleased to come across some slim-leaf pawpaw (Asimina spatulata) while botanizing Apalachicola National Forest. I find their flowers extra aesthetic! The second photo is what I’m calling the same species with just a variably colored flower; everything about it but that was the same and growing only feet away. There seems to be some taxonomic confusion with this species and “others” like it (see Asimina longifolia and A. angustifolia) but I’ve followed Weakley who has merged them together as A. spatulata and comments more work is needed on this group and its geographically coherent forms. Whatever the case, I was happy to make its acquaintance.

It may have not been the most flashy of life orchids I saw during my time on the panhandle but it was definitely the rarest. Florida ladies’-tresses (Spiranthes floridana) [G1/S1] is an endemic of the coastal plain and used to range from Texas to the Carolinas. It’s always been a scarcity but the last few decades have seen this species drop off the face of the earth due to fire suppression, habitat loss/alteration, and being a fickle, ephemeral species to begin with. In recent times it’s only been known from a single site or two in Florida and less than 10 across its entire range. This site in Apalachicola National Forest was a somewhat recent discovery and I was extremely pleased to get the chance to see such a rarity in bloom. Finding it in its open savanna habitat (third photo) was a bit of a needle-in-a-haystack situation but well worth the trouble!

I know I’ve shared the white pitcher plant (Sarracenia leucophylla) [G3/S3] numerous times already but what’s another time or two? I especially like the pitcher in the third photo that lacks anthocyanin and thus any red pigmentation. The ones in my bog garden are currently flowering and just beginning to send up their spring pitchers.

I wouldn’t be a very good sedge-head if I didn’t include at least one post from my beloved Cyperaceae. The panhandle isn’t exactly a Carex heavy place but it was exciting to see gobs of pine barrens sedge (Carex turgenscens) in a high quality seepage slope. Their bright green plump perigynia really stood out among all the orchids, pitcher plants, sundews etc. around them. You know, the ugly and boring plants ;). #Nature #NatureGram #NaturePhotography #NatureLovers #IGNature #InstaFlower #InstaNature #PlantsOfInstagram #Wildflower #Botany #Graminoid #Sedge #Sedgehead #Cyperaceae #Carex #SeepageSlope #Biodiversity #PineSavanna #BlackwaterRiverStateForest #Florida #FloridaPanhandle #FloridaBotany #FloridaNature #Biodiversity #ALGibson #TheBuckeyeBotanist

Not the most exciting photo at first glance but a very intriguing botanical topic and story nonetheless. At least to me. The Florida panhandle and costal plain region has a curious tuliptree (Liriodendron tulipifera). Most are used to seeing tuliptrees in rich mesic woodlands but on the panhandle this fella occurs in wet-mesic, acidic habitats such as pocosins, bog and savanna margins, seepage zones etc. It even holds up to burns and it isn’t uncommon to see their trunks scorched 10-15’+ up. Definitely not your Midwest’s tuliptree! It’s currently treated as an undescribed variety but those much more intelligent than I believe further research of this wide-spread taxon will result in 2-3 species of Liriodendron in eastern North America. This little seedling pictured here is even more interesting as it’s a special form of the coastal plains entity with essentially unlobed leaves and affectionately called the “lollipop” tuliptree. The more you know... #Nature #NatureGram #NatureLovers #NaturePhotography #IGNature #InstaNature #InstaTree #InstaBotany #Tree #Botany #Dendrology #Liriodendron #Magnoliaceae #Tuliptree #CoastalPlain #PineSavanna #Florida #FloridaBotany #FloridaNature #FloridaPanhandle #ApalachicolaNationalForest #ALGibson #TheBuckeyeBotanist

A dainty, delicate, and wispy wildflower. That’s how I’d describe the Carolina milkweed (Asclepias cinerea). I fortuned upon a handful of plants beginning to break bud in a high quality upland pine sandhill in Apalachicola National Forest and was rather surprised by the plant’s shy demeanor. What surprises me even more is how this species got the name ‘Carolina’ milkweed when it barely, just barely occurs in SC and nowhere else in those two states. It’s a milkweed largely of the FL panhandle but occurs in a few other adjacent coastal states as well. I have to admit I’d never even really heard of this species before I identified it but was immensely happy to have a new milkweed life species on my list!
