Eclipse shadows through my voodoo lily! Look for the thin crescent shaped shadows among the foliage. I wish I had the chance to travel to totality but here in Athens, Ohio we had ~90% cover and it was more than noticeable! Light was weird with an overcast and dimmed look/feel and the temperature cooled from the sweltering conditions earlier. Thankfully skies are 100% clear. Very cool experience and I'm begging for good weather in April 2024 when western Ohio gets a totality path. Pardon my language but the natural and celestial world is fucking awesome!

For my penultimate post on this #TributeToTheBruce I'll share another of my favorite non-botanical experiences with the chance encounter with a black bear. @rob_routledge and I were headed back to the cabin when we noticed a big, black thing a ways out in a meadow and realized it was a bear! So we stopped and admired the beast with our binoculars and zoom lenses. It was several hundred yards away but Rob was able to do a moose call imitation that got the bear curious enough to stand on its hind legs and stare back at us. I'd seen tracks and scat on the Bruce before and figured that's as good as it would get but was never happier to be wrong. I love bears and never get to see enough of them!

I've ended my daily #TributeToTheBruce posts with an orchid the last two nights so I might as well keep the streak going. The Bruce made its first big impression on me by the fact that yellow lady's slippers (Cypripedium pubescens & parviflorum var. makasin) are literal roadside weeds. Thousands of them line the rural back roads just about everywhere and would make the uninitiated think they were some invasive exotic. It's an unforgettable sight and despite being an orchid-obsessed person, I kinda got bored of them after a week up there haha. Most you see are large yellows (first photo) but many show signs of both large and small in large hybrid swarms (second photo) where calling them one way or the other can be dicy. There are legit northern small yellows too (third photo) and they often occur alone and in wetter situations.

Earlier this week I had one of the most memorable days in the field this year with a long, long awaited life critter. Despite working in their region of the state for years, I'd never come across a timber rattlesnake in the wild. They're an endangered species in Ohio and only still found in eight southern counties; this one in Vinton. This particular timber was a big one at over four feet long and as thick as my upper forearm. It never acted overly aggressive but did rattle twice, which was awesome to hear in person. It more than made my day, week, even month in the state. What a strikingly patterned and beautiful creature! I've now had the pleasure of seeing all three of Ohio's venomous snakes in the wild: copperhead, Massasauga and timber rattlesnakes.

Spent a wonderful spring morning and afternoon doing some rare plant surveying/monitoring in my beloved Shawnee State Forest. I couldn't help but check on some of my favorite orchid spots, too. They were waking up with with several species seen flowering or in bud, such as the always gorgeous pink lady's slippers (Cypripedium acaule). #Nature #NatureGram #NativeFlora #NaturalOhio #NatureLovers #NaturePhotography #IGNature #PlantsOfInstagram #InstaFlower #InstaNature #InstaSpring #InstaOrchid #Wildflower #Botany #Orchid #WildOrchid #Orchidaceae #LadysSlipper #Cypripedium #Woodland #Spring #Ecology #Ohio #OhioBotany #OhioSpring #OhioWildflowers #OhioNature #OhioOrchids #ALGibson #TheBuckeyeBotanist

Thanks to @taluswalker and @newyork_botany and their #MonardaMonday discussions, I had to jump in late and try to clear the water so to speak. The bee balms of the genus Monarda are a bit of a mess in my opinion and could use some work; there's some splitting to be done. Ohio is technically home to four different species and all four are easily told apart in their pure forms. However, there's definitely a fifth species that needs describing and is exhibited in the top left photo. I've seen it tentatively called lowland bee balm (M. 'serotina') and grows in shaded, moist, rich sites along streams and wet, low wooded areas in S/SE Ohio. It's extremely pale pink with a small scattering of magenta dots in/near the throat and doesn't bloom until mid July in my area. Some may call it wild bergamot (M. fistulosa), seen top right, but fistulosa is bright pink with no dotting and the true stuff occurs in open, sunny situations. The other three Ohio bee balms featured at the bottom of the collage are (starting at the left) Monarda clinopodia (white flowers with magenta dots; blooms early-mid June in shaded, moist, rich stream sides and woodlands); Monarda punctata (very unique looking and restricted to open, dry, sandy habitats); and Oswego tea or scarlet bee balm that I shared the other day that is easily identified by its brilliantly red flowers. Feel free to chime in with you Monarda opinions and experiences!

It's not all about the pretty and conspicuous when it comes to being a field botanist. The bedstraws/wild licorice (Galium spp.) are a numerous bunch in Ohio and very often overlooked for their inconspicuous, sometimes weedy appearance. Personally, I have a soft spot for them and enjoy their diversity. Ohio is home to 13 different species with some being dirt common, others very rare . I decided to do a quick lineup of four species frequently encountered in southeastern Ohio's woodlands and forests to show how similar and yet different they are. From left to right: fragrant bedstraw (Galium triflorum), shining bedstraw (G. concinnum), lance-leaved wild licorice (G. lanceolatum) and wild licorice (G. circaezans). I know this post isn't aesthetically engaging but I think it's important to celebrate all plants and pay attention to the "ugly" ones too!

Earlier this summer a most stunning botanical discovery was made in Tar Hollow State Forest. A small patch of oak fern (Gymnocarpium dryopteris) was found by a pair of local naturalists on a secluded steep mesic hillside under some old oaks. This cute little fern is endangered in Ohio (S1) and only known from a precious few extant sites, all in the northeast corner of the state. It has never been known/collected this far south in Ohio and is hundreds of miles disjunct from any other oak fern site, making it a shocking find and one I didn't believe for myself until I saw photos, and especially after seeing it in the flesh earlier today. Ive failed in my searches for it up north at old sites and was most pleased to finally have this one on my Ohio list. I've seen it countless times further north in Michigan, New York, Ontario etc. Definitely a priceless addition to Ohio's rich botanical and natural history if you ask me!

It wouldn't be a true day in our prairie fens without spotting some round-leaved sundew (Drosera rotundifolia) on the wet mossy hummocks along the marly rivulets. It's actually quite common in the right spots once you get the eye for it. They were just about to start blooming during my visit and even without their charming flowers were a most welcome sight.

When you see too many fantastic floral friends to share efficiently on IG is when you're most thankful for the multi-photo option. Here's eight wildflowers common to west-central Ohio's prairie fen remnants. I grew up in this area of the state and cut my botanical teeth in these fascinating ecosystems, thus many of these plants and places are quite special to me. The eight species featured here are obedient plant (Physostegia virginiana), fen orange coneflower (Rudbeckia sullivantii), spotted joe-pye weed (Eutrochium maculatum), whorled rosinweed (Silphium trifoliatum), marsh blazingstar (Liatris spicata), grey-headed coneflower (Ratibida pinnata), blue vervain (Verbena hastata), and prairie dock (Silphium terebinthinaceum). Be sure to swipe left and enjoy them all!

One particular site during my work in Ohio's prairie fens this week had lots of saw-tooth sunflower (Helianthus grosseserratus), which isn't really out of the ordinary. What was weird was the number of plants showing off a 'double bloom'!. It's caused by a genetic mutation where the flower replaces a variety (or all) reproductive parts with petals and makes for a gorgeous appearance. It's a very sought after effect in the floral trade and a rarity to see in the wild. It wasn't just one sunflower in this prairie fen, either but several dozen in one large colony that bore these mesmerizing blooms. I'd never seen this species, or any sunflower for that matter exhibit this trait before 🌻. #Nature #NatureGram #NatureLovers #NaturePhotography #IGNature #PlantPorn #PlantsOfInstagram #InstaNature #InstaPlant #Botany #Wildflower #Sunflower #Helianthus #Asteraceae #DoubleBloom #GeneticMutation #Fen #SedgeMeadow #Wetland #DoubleFlower #Ohio #OhioNature #OhioBotany #ExploreOhio #ALGibson #TheBuckeyeBotanist

More orchid love from last weekend with the stunning and regal crested coralroot (Hexalectris spicata). This rarity only occurs in extreme southern Ohio's open mixed oak woodlands and margins of cedar glades/limestone barrens. Its flowers to my eye look like they've been molded from clay and delicately painted. The Hexalectris genus is almost exclusively found in southern Texas, New Mexico and Arizona in the US, except for this species here that ranges widely. It's certainly one of our most stunning orchids and a mycoheterotroph that much like its other coralroot brethren doesn't photosynthesize and requires subterranean mycorrhizal fungi to gain nourishment. Individual plants often only come up and flower once a decade.

Another of the seven orchids my group and I came across last weekend was plenty of cranefly orchid (Tipularia discolor) in excellent shape. It's arguably Ohio's most common orchid, at least in my region of the state. It must be one of the species that favors the changing climate as in just a decade or so I've seen more and more of it more and more often. The flowers are rather cute but as a whole are nigh on impossible to photograph without something in the background. It's about as inconspicuous as one of our wild orchids can get. It's much easier to spot in the non-growing season when it's overwintering leaf is visible and one of the only 'green' things still around.

Well, I think I've clogged everyone's feeds with enough of northern Michigan and the UP for the last few weeks. I've shared most of what I wanted to and figure it's time to mosey on, as I have plenty of Ohio stuffs to get back to! I love every second up in the northern woods and wetlands and wish I had so much more time to botanize and explore them. So I'll close this long tribute to Michigan in an appropriate way with one of Lake Michigan's ineffably beautiful sunsets. A locally common plant on the wooded stabilized dunes in the Grand Sable Dunes was the fascinating pinesap (Hypopitys monotropa). This mycoheterotroph is closely related to ghost pipe (Monotropa uniflora) but differs in its coloration, smaller size, and stems bearing numerous flowers. Last I heard there was work being done on this 'species', as it's likely a complex that needs splitting. I'm fully in favor of that because there's definitely at least two different entities here in Ohio. One is this same species here that blooms during the summer and is a yellow-tan color; the other blooms in the fall and is a scarlet red and yellow color. It's a wide-ranging species found throughout the continent and only missing in the Great Plains region. It's one I see from time to time but never enough!

Last week I shared a photo of a stunning wall cloud formation coming off Lake Michigan as a strong line of storms approached. I totally forgot that I took a video too and think it really captures the eerie calm before the storm. All through my childhood I was most obsessed with weather and had my sights set on being a meteorologist. Obviously, my path deviated from that plan at some point but weather still fascinates me to my core and is one of the most beautiful of all nature's processes! #Nature #NatureGram #NatureLovers #NaturePhotography #IGNature #Landscape #InstaLandscape #Storm #Weather #SkyPorn #WallCloud #LakeMichigan #GreatLakes #SleepingBearDunes #NationalLakeshore #Michigan #PureMichigan #MichiganNature #ExploreMichigan #ALGibson #TheBuckeyeBotanist

The northern coniferous woodlands and swamps are rife with numerous closely related species/genera collectively known as wintergreens. This name is due to most of them having evergreen leaves. They're plants I rarely get to experience as a 'southerner' and cherish any moment with them. We saw more than I have to share here in photos but in this collage are four of the more frequently encountered ones within the Grand Sable Dunes. Starting top left and moving clockwise is green-flowered pyrola (Pyrola chlorantha), one-sided wintergreen (Orthilia secunda), pink pyrola (Pyrola asarifolia), and one-flowered wintergreen (Moneses uniflora). They all now reside within the mega family of Ericaceae, formerly of their own family: Pyrolaceae. Other wintergreens seen but not included here were pipsissewa (Chimaphila umbellata), large-leaved pyrola (P. elliptica), and round-leaved pyrola (P. americana). We searched high and low for the very rare UP disjunct lesser pyrola (P. minor) in some of its known haunts but had no luck.

One of the last orchids my group and I found on our 30 orchid day while botanizing all over the eastern UP was the tall white bog orchid (Platanthera dilatata var. dilatata). I'd only seen it once before years ago as it was just breaking bud up on Ontario's Bruce Peninsula, so it was a most welcomed reunion. About a dozen or so of them were in perfect flower on the far side of a kettle lake's floating bog mat and took the last of my energy to push through the millennia of accumulated peat to see. Worth it! A fun fact is this species is much more common out West where it occurs in a couple varieties. Here in the East we have the typical variety and it's much more infrequently encountered.

And now for some aesthetic wildflowers that help stabilize the shoreline's dunes and sands. The Great Lakes beaches are more botanically diverse than you'd think at first glance with dozens of specialized species making a living in this harsh environment. In this post are eight different plants commonly encountered in the Sleeping Bear Dunes. Just about all are either really rare or don't occur in Ohio due to my state's severe lack of natural Lake Erie beach left. Their identities are: beach pea (Lathyrus japonicus), Great Lakes sand cherry (Prunus pumila var. pumila), buffaloberry (Shepherdia canadensis), Pitcher's thistle (Cirsium pitcheri), searocket (Cakile edulenta), sand dune willow (Salix cordata), harebell (Campanula rotundifolia), and bearberry (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi). The sand cherry, Pitcher's thistle, and sand dune willow are all Great Lakes endemics and thus only occur on these special beaches. Such a wealth of excellent botany!

Long days of botanizing is hungry work. Thankfully, nature knows this and the northern peatlands this time of year are a bounty of tasty berries. The tastiest of all are the half dozen or so blueberry species (Vaccinium) known from the region. Two I came across at peak ripeness were tall bilberry (V. membranaceum) at the top, and velvet-leaved blueberry (V. myrtilloides) on bottom. I couldn't believe the size, or taste of the tall bilberries. It's one of the area's many western disjuncts and is only known from the southern shores of Lake Superior along the UP and adjacent eastern Ontario. You're not going to find it again until you're way west into the Rocky Mountains. I wish being a professional wild berry forager/eater was a real thing. I'd be the world's best 😂. #Nature #NatureGram #NatureLovers #NaturePhotography #IGNature #InstaPlant #PlantPorn #PlantsOfInstagram #Shrub #Dendrology #Botany #Blueberry #Bilberry #Vaccinium #Ericaceae #Foraging #WildBerries #UP #LakeSuperior #WildFruit #Michigan #MichiganNature #MichiganBotany #PureMichigan #ExploreMichigan #UP #ALGibson #TheBuckeyeBotanist

One of the best things about vacationing up where we do is the food! I love fish of all kinds but the Great Lakes yellow perch might take the cake. I thoroughly enjoyed my fair share while up there. If only I could eat so well all the time!

The spotted coralroot (Corallorhiza maculata) was in stellar shape during my time up in the Grand Sable Dunes. It's a species I've seen sparingly in the east and one I could never tire of. They're mycoheterotrophs and rely on a symbiotic relationship with subterranean mycorrhizal fungi for energy, as they don't produce chlorophyll and thus don't photosynthesize. The third photo shows a nice clump in situ with the added pleasure of ram's head lady's slippers (Cypripedium arietinum) setting to seed in the foreground. The orchid species density and mixing of the area was mind melting with 6-7 species all growing within spitting distance of one another!
