Glen Arbor, the small lake community where we stay had an art fair this morning that we decided to visit. Glad we did as there were so many talented people and shops that I couldn't help but buy a few things I instantly loved to support their craft. On left is a ceramic plate of a pink lady's slipper; top right a glazed ceramic tile of the federally threatened and Great Lakes endemic Pitcher's thistle; and bottom right a piece of Petoskey stone that has been cut/polished into an adorable acorn. Petoskey is a specialized type of fossilized coral only found in the NW corner of Michigan's lower peninsula and a beauty I've treasured since I was a little kid. There was so many more incredible pieces of all different kinds like glass blown items, woodworking and carvings, cartography, ceramics, rock and gem jewelry, paintings, nature photography, knitting, metal sculptures etc. Very cool!

Near the northern tip of Michigan's lower peninsula resides a huge expense of grounded sphagnum bog that holds a priceless treasure within. Literal thousands of white fringed orchid (Platanthera blephariglottis) in perfect flower greeted my botanical cohorts and I when we emerged from our hike through the woods, their delicate fringes dripping with jeweled morning dew. It was a sight unlike anything I've seen and the second photo barely is able to explain. The third photo shows a rare and odd form of the white fringed orchid without its characteristic fringing on the labellum: a white fringeless orchid, if I may. It's known as forma holopetala and the cherry on top of our visit to this site. The whole place was like a dream world I never wanted to leave or wake up from... #Nature #NatureGram #NatureLovers #NaturePhotography #IGNature #InstaPlant #InstaNature #PlantID #PlantPorn #PlantsOfInstagram #Wildflower #Botany #InstaOrchid #Orchid #Orchidaceae #Platanthera #WhiteFringedOrchid #Bog #SphagnumBog #Peat #Ecology #Michigan #MichiganNature #MichiganWildflowers #MichiganOrchids #ExploreMichigan #PureMichigan #ALGibson #TheBuckeyeBotanist

Another rare Great Lakes endemic that calls the local sandy beaches home is the federally threatened Pitcher's thistle (Cirsium pitcheri). It's only found on shoreline dunes and beach ridges along Lakes Michigan, Huron, and Superior. This thistle's glaucous blue/green foliage and cream flowers make it visually unique among its ilk and an easy ID, especially given the habitat. Pitcher's thistle is monocarpic, meaning it only flowers once before dying and can spend well over a decade as a basal rosette building up its stores to shoot towards the sky and bloom. I see it all the time in the Sleeping Bear Dunes area of Michigan and ever being the botanist can't help but think about the countless people on the beach that play and tan right next to this rare and incredible plant completely and utterly oblivious to its precious existence. This photo here has last night's crazy storm in the background. #Nature #NatureGram #NatureLovers #NaturePhotography #IGNature #PlantsOfInstagram #PlantID #InstaFlower #InstaNature #InstaPlant #Wildflower #Botany #Asteraceae #Thistle #Cirsium #GreatLakes #PitchersThistle #Endemic #Dunes #Sand #SleepingBearDunes #RarePlant #Michigan #MichiganNature #MichiganWildflowers #PureMichigan #ExploreMichigan #ALGibson #TheBuckeyeBotanist

As much as I love watching sunsets over Lake Michigan, I love watching massive storm squalls roll in even more. The same grounded sphagnum bog with the plethora of white fringed orchid was a paradise for a few other orchids, too including many grass pinks (Calopogon tuberosus). However, there was a specific one that made my jaw drop and left me speechless. The monstrosity pictured here is a single grass pink with a forked stem and a total of 28 individual flowers on it!!! Unbelievable! I wouldn't believe it had I not seen it with my own two eyes. It stood as high as my hips (I'm 5'9") and I had to check multiple times to make sure it was a single plant/stem. I've never seen anything like it before and would love to know how old it was. Many orchid species can live for multiple decades and I know this grass pink didn't achieve such insane dimensions overnight. Anyone else ever seen one even close to this?

One of our last stops on my marathon botanical adventure in the UP was a stretch of beach along Lake Michigan's northern shoreline. There grew the rare Great Lakes endemic Lake Huron tansy (Tanacetum bipinnatum subsp. huronense), a species I'd chased for years to see in flower but been burned by vegetative plants or old seed heads. This time around I got lucky with some plants in prime shape as the sun began to set over the lake. It's restricted to dunes (both active and older, stabilized ones) and cobbled, sandy beaches. Authors can't seem to find unanimous agreement on the taxonomy of this species with some elevating it to species level, others as a variety/subspecies, or all just T. bipinnatum. Regardless what you want to call it, it's rare, it's unique, and oddly beautiful.

I can't even begin to put into words how incredible my day botanizing Michigan's Upper Peninsula was yesterday. I left at 4:45am and didn't get back until 12:45am but visited some incredible floating bogs, dunes, rich cedar swamps, jack pine sand barrens etc. and encountered dozens of life plants. Best and craziest of all was seeing not 10, not 20, not 25 but 30 species of wild orchid in a single day!!! 22 of the species were blooming, including 3 being life orchids I'll share later. For now, I'll start with a green ash/balsam fir swamp woods that had hundreds upon hundreds of small purple fringed orchid (Platanthera psycodes) in bloom near the Grand Sable Dunes of Grand Marais. I've never seen so many in my life, and like most of the day was left utterly speechless. 30 orchids and 20 hours on the road in a single day are records I'll likely never break. Special thanks to my awesome botany bud @rob_routledge for meeting up and taking me out!

Along the margins of a secluded kettle lake in the wild depths of the UP was one of the most impressive and incredible floating bog mats I've ever had the honor to explore. The botanical diversity was dizzying with the instant attention-grabber being the countless thousands of northern pitcher plant (Sarracenia purpurea) scattered about. The millennia of peat accumulation to produce such a phenomenon is worth the patience! It was home to many sedges, other carnivorous plants, orchids, and ericaceous shrubs but more on all that later. Perhaps best of all was the constant song of winter wren, veery, and white-throated sparrow on the air... #Nature #NatureGram #NatureLovers #NaturePhotography #IGNature #InstaPlant #InstaNature #PlantID #PlantPorn #PlantsOfInstagram #Wildflower #Botany #PitcherPlant #Sarracenia #CarnivorousPlant #Bog #FloatingBog #Acidic #Peat #KettleLake #UP #UpperPeninsula #Michigan #MichiganNature #MichiganWildflowers #ExploreMichigan #PureMichigan #ALGibson #TheBuckeyeBotanist

Bright and early tomorrow morning Kara and I leave for a week in northern Michigan paradise. We're staying in the Sleeping Bear Dunes national lakeshore area, a place I've spent many a summer exploring and relaxing in. Can't wait for all the fresh Great Lakes seafood and gorgeous views along Lake Michigan. I'll be spending a day or two botanizing the UP with some friends, too and have some awesome life plants to chase. So bear with me as I clog my feed with lots of northern flora and scenery for the next week (or two more likely). We've been looking forward to this!

Amazing seafood dinner tonight with my parents and brother. Love it when we can all get together and catch up over a delicious meal. Extra happy my brother enjoys oysters on the half shell as much as I do and will always partake in some with me. Some people eat to live; I live to eat. Foodie forever!

Few summer bloomers explode off the landscape quite like Michigan lilies (Lilium michiganense) do. Their fire orange recurved tepals are accented with a liberal scattering of polka dots that attract my eyes as well as any potential pollinators. It's a plant of open, sunny, and moist-wet places in the western glaciated half of Ohio, and occurs throughout the Midwest and Great Lakes region. The turk's cap lily (L. superbum) looks very similar but thankfully is distributed more east and south than Michigan lily. Where their ranges overlap you can distinguish the two by Michigan lily having a cherry red style (turk's is orange-yellow); the anthers on Michigan are typically about or <0.5" long, Turk's >0.5" long; Turk's 'throat' is green, Michigan's is uniformly orange; and the bulbs of Michigan are yellow vs turk's white, but who wants to figure it out that way. Michigan lily usually doesn't get as big and impressive as turk's cap, either but this specimen and the ones around it were over 6' tall and the most stunning example I've ever seen!

A beautiful patch of ghost pipes (Monotropa uniflora) emerging from the detritus of an oak-hemlock-beech woods. This mycoheterotroph completely lacks chlorophyll and utilizes subterranean mycorrhizal fungi networks that tap into trees for its nourishment. No need for photosynthesizing means it can grow in deep shade where few other plants can compete, as suggested in the photo. Recent genetic research has shown it and its ilk are most related to plants in Ericaceae rather than deserving of their own family. It's one of my favorite plants and as sure a sign summer is waning as any in the hills and hollers of SE Ohio.

Tiny. Green. Inconspicuous. That about sums up the rare green adders mouth orchid (Malaxis unifolia). It has the distinction of having the smallest individual flowers of any Ohio orchid and even when dozens of them are in full bloom it's a very easy plant to overlook. It grows in a variety of nutrient-poor acidic habitats, from upland oak-pine woodlands to sphagnum mats near/along seeps and ponds. It definitely is one of those plants that's hard to really get a grasp on just how rare, or common it truly is. It's certainly a master of disguise, although It seems to like me as I've found a half dozen or so new sites for it the last few years and relocated several more. It's similar to mushroom hunting in that once you get the taste and eye for it, they don't blend in as well. It may be easily overlooked but it's a personal favorite of mine! P.S. check out my poster on all Ohio's native orchids for sale if you haven't already! Link is on my page!

I cherish the fact I live a mere 15-20 minutes from an awesome population of purple fringeless orchid (Platanthera peramoena). It allows me to pay them multiple visits every mid July and soak up their incredible color and beauty. I love them, I adore them, I want some more of 'em!

I often get asked which side of the fence I fall when it comes to being a taxonomic lumper or splitter. Like most anything in life it's not a black and white issue but mostly grey and depends on each situation. One such situation where I'm an adamant splitter is the case of the clasping dogbane (Apocynum sibiricum). Some treat is as a variety or mere abnormality of the common dogbane (A. cannabinum) but it's pretty darn distinct to my eye and experiences. Clasping dogbane differs in its obviously clasping/sessile leaves throughout the entire plant but additionally acts as a more conservative species and typically occurs in higher quality habitats like prairies, barrens, river scours/gravel bars etc., especially when in association with limestone. I seem to be in the minority overall but a handful of close, trusted botanical authorities agree its distinct and worth treating as a standalone taxon. Anyone else's thoughts/experiences?

An uncommon summer bloomer in select areas of eastern Ohio is the scarlet beebalm (Monarda didyma). Its brilliantly colored flowers stick out like a sore thumb and are the dreams of many a pollinator, including the ruby-throated hummingbird. It grows in moist woodland settings such as thickets and stream sides in dappled shade. It quickly became a popular member of people's wildflower gardens throughout the eastern US and is more often see in cultivation than the wild, at least in my experiences. No matter where you see it you're sure to take notice. It has a delicious fruity aroma to my nose, too!
