For those wondering "Why didn't SHR or HMS sign Matt to a ride?" Well Matt's currently 45 years old and is the oldest active full time driver in the series. Bowman is 24, and Byron is 19, and Aric's 33. Matt may have 1 or 2 good years years while the others career are either just starting, or getting a shot of a lifetime. Aric probably has 10 more years of racing in him Byron & Bowman have 20 or more years of racing in their future. "Matts proved he's a good racer, he deserves the ride!" Yea but how are younger drivers supposed to prove what they got if they aren't given a chance in the equipment? And finally the big kicker, money. Matt Kenseth will make close to 8-9 million this year from his contract, sponsors, races, etc, and Byron and Bowman both will make around 1.5 - 2 million dollars. Which from a business standpoint is the smarter option? Jones contract for next year is likely around 1.5 million not including sponsors, races earning, or anything like that. Would you rather put a guy in the car who's 45, wanting a 6 to 8 million dollar contract, or the one offering WAY less and way younger?
I wish Matt could've gotten a ride for next year but it's just how it goes.
