Object of the Week: Mary Elizabeth "Lilian" Aldrich's cookbook.
Lilian Woodman was born in 1841 in Bangor, Maine and married Thomas Bailey Aldrich of Portsmouth. She memorialized his childhood home at Strawbery Banke in his honor, which we acquired in 1979. Many people may know of her husband's literary success, but she also wrote "Crowding Memories" and this recipe book found in our collections! Published in 1925, recipes from Duckling Stew to Christmas Cake can be found. We chose to highlight her molasses cookies because of their connection to New England history.
~Note her use of buttermilk, an ingredient only used in New England variations!~
