On the evening of February 26, 2012, 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was walking back from the convenience store in Sanford, Florida, after having purchased some candy. That’s when he was spotted by George Zimmerman as he was driving through the neighborhood. Thinking Trayvon looked rather suspicious walking in the rain with his dark hoodie and looking at homes, George called the police’s non-emergency number to report him, stating that there have been a number of break-ins in the neighborhood lately and Trayvon looked like he was ‘’up to no goods or on drugs or something’’. About two minutes into the call, George told the dispatcher that Trayvon was now running and he got out of his vehicle to follow after him, although eventually lost sight of him. The dispatcher advised him to stop following Trayvon, assuring that the police would be there soon. However, after the call ended, George continued to trail after Martin on foot and a violent altercation took place between them which ended with George fatally shooting Trayvon in the chest. George claimed self-defense and was charged in Trayvon’s death. A jury acquitted him of his charges on the grounds of self-defense, despite the fact that Trayvon was unarmed.
