Electricity at DO Ferreiro‼️
We had a lovely visit in between the rush of harvest & two monumental weeks of round-the-clock work for the Méndez family. We spent the day with the next-generation of DO Ferreiro, Encarna and Manuel. This sister/ brother duo work together with their father Gerardo to run all aspects of the family business. Do Ferreiro is all about terroir & today Manuel & Encarna are pushing the exploration of Rías Baixas into new, uncharted territory. Manuel is busy isolating plots and exploring what different soils, elevations, & exposures bring to the expression of these great wines. He is farming single vineyards which demonstrate that site is multidimensional here in the same way that it is in all great wine growing regions of the world. With the introduction of his new, singular Lourido, Adina, & Dous Ferrados wines, he is leading the way to completely redefining the concept of what we think of when we speak of albariño from Rías Baixas. Encarna is the heart of the winery & family, running all aspects of their extremely complex business to world-class standards.
2018 was a wild year where the weather was cool and rainy in June and July, followed by an incredibly warm August and September, which resulted in mildew in many vineyards and the loss of much fruit. The remaining fruit from vineyards that were unaffected is excellent. As I write this, the September harvest is one of the warmest on record in Spain. The skill & experience of the team will allow them to make good selections of perfectly ripe fruit with reduced yields resulting in exceptional wine in 2018. We cannot wait to taste this vintage! Good luck Do Ferreiro!
