A book I've read (original book: henri a second life, alastair sooke by penguin books) #henrimatisse #alastairsooke #asecondlife #bookdesign #bookscoffeeartplants #behance #graphicdesign

These three items arrived for me today and the wait for them has been terrible, mainly due to the fact I'm really into Outlander now and have wanted to watch the rest of the season (they are only showing one episode a week on TV right now). I also gave in and bought the first book, as well as a documentary on a new interest of mine, Jane Austen :)

How Modern Art was Saved by Donald Duck, by Alastair Sooke. 'Spanning Lichtenstein's career, and explaining his unique style, it is a journey through the life of one of the twentieth century's greatest artists.' Penguin Special, 2013.

This month was a fairly slow month for reading but it's been a case of quality over quantity. THIALH has now been added to my list of favourites eventhough it was a bit like taking a punch to the stomach. The Search Warrant is a book set against the backdrop of occupied France and the case of the missing 15-year-old Dora Bruder. Finally I read a wonderful little book by Alastair Sooke about Matisse's final years and his paper cut out work.

Henri Matisse: A Second Life 🌟🌟🌟🌟
#junewrapup

After undergoing surgery for abdominal cancer in 1941 at aged 71 that left him weak, mostly bedridden and unable to paint, Henri Matisse adapted to his changed circumstances and developed a less physically demanding way of making art.
*
For the last decade of his life, Matisse concentrated on cutting out shapes from brightly painted paper and arranging these colorful pieces in lively, vibrant ways.
*
Alastair Sooke's book, Henri Matisse: A Second Life, documents this period in Matisse's life and is shown here with Panel with Mask, a paper cut-out work from 1947.
*
We were lucky enough to see this piece in person last weekend at the exhibition, Matisse in the Studio, currently at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston until July 9th.
*
The accompanying note for Panel with Mask said that Matisse..."pinned the shapes to the wall of his studio in Nice, where he lived surrounded by his work. He referred to his studio as 'a little garden all around me where I can walk.' Elements were moved and adjusted until Matisse found a balance and rhythm he liked. This work retains the fresh three-dimensionality of cut-outs in Matisse's studio, which were only lightly attached to a paper ground."
*
Many thanks to my teenage son for holding up this book without complaint in the very crowded exhibition 😊.

I'm blaming @absurdityoverload for this one. How could I resist this book when it popped up on her story? (Those brushstrokes!) It's been a while since I've read any non-fiction, so I'm going to try to squeeze it onto this month's reading list 📚 After seeing some of Matisse's cut-outs last year at @tateliverpool, I'm looking forward to finding out more. ☺
