This is a wonderful city...art and history surround you everywhere. This hunting scene is called the Matthias fountain and depicts the legend of Llonka by the Hungarian sculptor #alajosstróbl It is a monumental work of art. The fountain recalls a story from the era of King Matthias Corvinus.
King Matthias often went hunting incognito. One day, when he and his friends were on a hunting trip, he met the beautiful peasant girl Szép Llonka. They fell in love at first sight. Matthias never revealed his true identity to her but instead, before leaving to return to his Palace, he made Llonka promise to come and visit him in Buda.
As soon as she was able, Ilonka made plans and set off for Buda but when she arrived, a large crowd had gathered to welcome the king from a victorious battle. Ilonka immediately recognised Matthias, in armour on his horse and was shocked to realise she had fallen in love with the king. Raised a simple peasant girl, she was certain she could never marry him and returned to her home on foot@consumed with sorrow. Shortly after, she tragically died from a broken heart.
Two weeks later the king, who hadn't noticed Ilonka in the crowd, went back to her house, only to find it empty.#budapest #history #matthiascorvinus #hungary #art #sculpture #lovelovelove #castlebuda #fountain #legend
