I realised recently that I'm experiencing a problem with practicing portraits: It's like trying to prepare an entire buffet without first learning how to cook the individual dishes. Not recommended.
The face has very complex features. Try to smoothly render all of it while dealing with greyscale values and color, the balance between warm and cool colors, specularity and sub-surface scattering... 🙀 There is just so much to think about, and I need to take the time to learn about these things in-depth! I really want to understand the technical skills deeply so I can paint better from imagination 🧡
So this time I did in-depth studies of a portion of the face. I did a few grayscale paintings, and then converted them to color using an Overlay layer. I did some colorpicking for that, but each time I'd guess the hue/brightness before looking at the numbers, which was actually a great exercise for me!
Sorry for the big wall of text-- it's what happens when I think too much about something, haha! 😸
