Hello everyone, I'm Alexandra, Alex for short, from @donteatthespatula! I'm honored to take over this account for the next six days and give you a glimpse of what meals look like in our house. I am located in Maryland where I live with my almost 10 month old daughter, Emily, my husband, and three cats. We began BLW just after Emily turned 6 months old. It has been so fun and easy to share what is on my plate with her. I am avid home cook and love to make meals with whole, nutrient dense foods. We are a paleo household, which means we are gluten free, dairy free, grain free, limited processed foods, refined sugar free, and legume free. What are you having for dinner tonight at your house? This Alex again from @donteatthespatula and we are having this delicious lemon dill baked salmon with green beans and baked sweet potato. Salmon is a fantastic food for 6+ months for many reasons. It is a nice soft texture, but firm enough to grip. But more importantly it is full vitamin b-12 omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin d, and so much more. This salmon recipe is so simple and something everyone will enjoy. ---------''
Lemon Dill Baked Salmon

Ingredients
● 1 lb wild caught salmon, deboned
● 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
● 1 lemon, thinly sliced
● 2 tablespoons fresh dill, chopped and divided

Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
2. Rinse salmon, pat dry, and place salmon on a parchment paper lined baking sheet.
3. Brush olive oil all over the top of the salmon.
4. Sprinkle half dill over the salmon. Layer the lemon slices over the salmon. Sprinkle remaining dill over the salmon.
5. Bake in oven for 20 minutes or until salmon is cook (flaky).
6. Remove from oven and let cool for 2-3 minutes. Cut in to portions. This will keep in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Snack attack time! Alex here from @donteatthespatula again. I mentioned in my introductory post that we are a paleo household, meaning we are grain free and have decided to hold off on introducing these to Emily. However, the popular grain puffs snack has it's positive attributes like introducing a new crunchy texture and help with refining the pincer grib. So I searched for an alternative I felt comfortable with and I found the perfect thing for us: freeze dried blueberries. The only ingredient is blueberries, full of antioxidant goodness, crunchy, but soft, and perfect for baby fingers. The key was, I found something that worked for us and that is something I like to stress about BLW. There is really no right or wrong way. It is your child and you are the one feeding them. Be confidentt in what are you doing and it will go great! I promise.

Alex here from @donteatthespatula this evening. I just cooked up these easy baked chicken thighs over on stories. Check it out for my tips and tricks for making this yummy dish. These are great for babies 6+ months. Recipe below.
Ingredients ● 4 bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs
● Herbs of your choice
● Avocado oil, Coconut oil, or other good fat

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 350 F.
2. Lightly coat a glass dish or rimmed baking sheet with oil and set aside.
2. Lay the chicken thighs on a cutting board meaty side up. Trim any loss skin/fat. You can choose to cut out the bones or leave them in, it is purely preference. I prefer to remove the bones prior to cooking
3. Sprinkle the herbs over the flesh chicken thighs.
4. Place chicken in preoiled plan, flesh side down in a single layer.
5. Lightly coat the skin side of chicken with a little oil then sprinkle herbs all over the top.
6. Bake chicken in preheated oven for 20-25 mins if boneless or 50-55 mins for bone in. The juices will run clear, and a meat thermometer reads 165 F.
7. For an extra crispy skin, place back in oven under broil for 3-4 minutes.
8. Can be kept in fridge for up to 3 days and frozen for a few weeks. To reheat place in oven at 300 F for 10-15 mins.

The salmon cakes go well with just a simple side salad. 💚 My go-to for salad greens is butter lettuce, but there are so many yummy choices. Which green leafy are you most fond of? 😊#martineaip [@eat_heal_thrive]

Colorful lunch today 🌈
Turkey liver, sauteed with red onions, radishes, greens, radish microgreens and the orange, is not only for the color, actually I used the juice for the salad 🍊

I was sooo hungry 😵 because I ate only fruits for breakfast. This is my lunch: salmon, plantain chips, avocado, arugula salad and for the first time, radish microgreens 🌱

Tapioca coconut pudding variations. Today with persimon fruit 🍧

"Crispy strips" , roasted cubed pumpkin and guacamole. The dinner is ready!

My ugliest soup so far 😄 but so healthy: purple kale, leek and broccoli sauteed, combined with bone broth and blended. Easy. The pink spors ar from the lemon juice 🍋

A special breakfast: tapioca pudding 🍧. I made this last night in the crockpot and in the morning I sliced half a very ripe mango. Super yummy!

Sooooo... this is my lunch: Crockpot cooked veal organs with leek and carrots, celebrity and sweet potato mash, pickles.

No filter! After a wait of almost two months it was time to open the pickeled cauliflower 💕 I've used beet root to get this amazing color.

Beef meatballs, marinara sauce (no-tomato) and zucchini&carrot tagliatelle 🍝

Listening to a podcast recently we have come to know that intestinal permeability (or leaky gut) is a symptom, not a cause. It’s a symptom of chronic stress, poor diet or gut infections. Typically, it is said, by addressing those things we won’t even have to treat leaky gut. It takes care of healing itself! 😃That’s really interesting stuff right there. It basically gives the power back to us because we CHOOSE what goes into our bodies and what does not!! .

Testing seems to swing both ways as well. Some practitioners feel it will confirm this theory while others feel that with adjusting above issues, the testing is unnecessary. Filling out a multiple symptoms questionnaire seems to be a good start and continued marker of progress in healing the gut and it definitely is not a quick fix but rather a slow process. Embrace it baby!!🙌

There are several ways to improve gut health with nutrition: things like bone broth, non-dairy fermented foods (think Kombucha, Sauerkraut, Kimchi,etc.), coconut oil and grass fed meats. Staying clear of gluten, grains, refined sugar and refined vegetable oil‘s is also advised. Supplementation and good old lifestyle changes are also needed for repair.👍

A few weeks ago my son says “bacon isn’t good for you!!!” 🤦‍♀️🤔I’m sorry what did you say????!!!!?? 🙅 I told him I didn’t raise him to speak that way😡🤣 But seriously, we had to sit down and have a serious conversation. I mean this is kind of along the same lines of the other big teenager “talks” we have.... We hammered out the bacon controversy and this is what I told him:

Bacon contains B12, Zinc and Selenium which are not produced by your body but vital. With Hashimoto’s, Selenium is especially crucial for thyroid function and Vitamin B is also great for anemic individuals (again, like me 💁) .

Bacon contains Omega-3 fatty acids and despite popular belief, a serving of bacon doesn’t lead to heart disease or high cholesterol. The Omega-3’s actually lower bad cholesterol and raise good cholesterol over time! .

Bacon contains choline which supports metabolism, nervous system function, muscle movement, energy and healthy liver and brain function. It’s kind of a big deal and it is also necessary for many vital processes in the body including DNA synthesis and cell structure. Our body can make a small amount of it but the majority needs to come from our diet. .

When you cover Brussel sprouts in bacon fat and cook them, they are magical 💃 Well, that’s not entirely scientific but it’s true!! Try it! 😋

Morning food pic hiatus to bring you the following alert:🚨 I promise, my kitchen table has not always looked like this but unfortunately that’s the condition of it these days💁 🤣
I feel like I kind of have to drive home this point especially in the world of social media. While I food prep twice a week, it does take a little bit effort to make it look pretty, take a picture and post it! It is an illusion and it’s not a bad thing but a friendly reminder that the “cool” shots don’t just happen, food doesn’t fall on a plate like that. Those shots take effort, time and patience!!! 🙄 .

Nutrition and our health journey can feel quite the same somedays, right?!?! Days we are on point☝️ and eat well 🍓🥑🍠🍳and get our movement in 🏃‍♀️🏋️🤸🏻‍♀️🏌️‍♀️🚴🏻‍♀️ and got our sleep😴 in and definitely got our meditation or prayer 🙏 in!! And other days..... well..... ya know, alarm 🚨 clock came to early, forgot to food prep 🤦‍♀️ and well.... a lot of cake happened.....🤷‍♀️What do we do with those days?! We should brush them off, press on, remind ourselves we are not defined by one day, one meal, one choice we make and enjoy the dang CAKE!!! 😬

But our reality is we typically do not. We guilt ourselves, shame ourselves, tell ourselves that we need to work or pay it off somehow. We need to make up for it and until then don’t even think about enjoying life. I say “we” because we has been me, many many times. 😔

Before I started making lifestyle changes and learning about healthy foods I thought a salad was healthy no matter the toppings and dressings. Later I obsessed over having to make "ranch" mockups. Now I know that a salad can be simple and delish. Finely chopped chives, cilantro, dill , fresh veg and a dressing thats just avocado, lemon, garlic and onion powder. Topped with leftover roast chicken. An apple a day..... so what does an apple a day REALLY do!? Let me break it down with ya☝️ Well first ya gotta keep the skin on👍 The skin of the apple is where the phytonutrients reside and that’s good because that carries all those anti cancer and antioxidant properties that we love oh so much! 😍

Research has also shown that eating 5 apples per week or more lowers respiratory problems like Asthma. Apples also provide us with fiber which a lot of people find hard to get in. Another advantage is that apples have a positive effect on our gut microbiome. Back to that gut health, right!?!😂 80% of your immune system is in your microbiome! Your microbiome is your guts healthy bacteria and which happens to help your body with pretty much every single process in it. It’s kind of a big deal!! 💁 .

Another cool thing is that there is over 7,000 types of apples worldwide!!! 🌎 😲 Pretty legit of I’d say so myself 🤘 Pink Lady and Honeycrisp are my faves 🍎 They make me happy!! .

The thing is, taking small steps each day and introducing one whole food like an apple can start to really provide a ton of benefits. Overhauling our diets SHOULD be a process and damn long one if you ask me. Mine has been under construction for seven years!!✌️

Because it’s meal prep day AND super study night AND because treats are OK!!! I tweaked my back yesterday doing who knows what and I opted out of Yoga this morning. The old me would have said to self “you didn’t earn that treat!! You don’t deserve it. And if you eat it you better feel guilty and get another day at the gym in this week”. Yes, that was my head space..... 🙄 Borderline embarrassing! .

Some days I crave something like this but a lot of days I do not. Today was a “crave day” and honestly, I don’t feel bad about it one bit. And I won’t do an extra Yoga sesh or walk or hike extra miles because of it. I will nurse my back, eat some of my cookie skillet and press on! ✊️

The mental strongholds that can exist towards food are something millions of us deal with. It can be a messy place in our heads about this but these habits can be changed over time creating new habits and behaviors!

Remember, it is never too late or a lost cause to start to care about your nutrition! Recently, someone close to me eliminated sugar in their diet and has been seeing and feeling amazing results with some of her chronic aches and pains she has had for decades! Educated by a great doctor, they took his advice and ran with it! Baby steps yield great results over time! 🤘 Remember it is always worth it and YOU are worth it!

The more research I do on Candida, the more I begin to see how years and years linked together in my life created the perfect storm that I deal with today. When I first saw my doctor in 2009, this is the very first thing I was diagnosed with. Better yet, I had no idea what it was! .

As some of you know, I was a Compounding Pharmacy Technician for 7 years before I decided to hang up the scrubs and pursue Nutrition as a full time career. At that time, I started to do research and I felt almost embarrassed, like I wasn’t properly taking care of my body. In general, I was taking care of my body but my nutrition was definitely pretty pathetic at the time. Yeast overgrowth, referred to as Candida, is a very common condition seen in autoimmune patients. Symptoms like sugar cravings, seasonal allergies, fatigue, brain fog and digestive issues are a few the symptoms that many people show signs of. .

Interestingly, the most common cause of Leaky Gut is, you guessed it, Candida!! 😳 My late teens and early 20’s were many years of repeated rounds of antibiotics due to constant ENT issues. I also had a weakened immune system and looking back, a diet high in sugar which only allows the yeast to feed off and continue to grow!! 🙄😠 These are the things that started to fester over 10 years before being diagnosed!!

There are several treatments options available but again, healing the gut is essential to conditions like candida and overcoming them!

I’m glad today is food prep day and this is just a few of the whole foods that I’m using in some of my recipes. Knowing I can rely on this instead of Pharmaceuticals to truly heal my body leaves me feeling very confident, hopeful, calm and inspired to show others it is possible!👍

When I finally found a smoothie that satisfies the craving 🙌 Coconut berry smoothie, I believe has been made exclusively for me 🤣🤣 Admittedly, I’m not a huge smoothie fan. I have friends that are just gung ho going bananas for these types of things especially in the morning🤘I want to know where the caffeine is at that time! 😒😜

I was determined to find a smoothie or two that I can mix into my rotation as a quick healthy option and to satisfy a beverage craving because I typically only consume water. THAT’S boring! 🙄 So I’ve been working on my Kombucha and smoothie habit!! Got to have goals, right?!?! 👍

Blueberries are one of the most nutrient dense berries. DNA damage is part of the reason we age and they can actually help neutralize some of the free radicals that causes damage to our DNA!! So cool! 😎 .

They also do beautiful things for our skin and boost brain health. Honestly, I’m constantly humbled and reminded that the foods we are created to eat, which are in abundance around us, are what ultimately serve us the best. It’s amazing to look at these little fruits and think of how much nutrients they provide us. It really is a compelling thing!! 🙌🙏

Never ever EVER under estimate the power that you have in the lives of those around you. As many of you know, I have Hashimoto’s and follow an Autoimmune Protocol diet but my son and husband do not. Interestingly, they are constantly blown away by how delicious the food is that I make. .

Don’t get me wrong, they’re both very supportive but it wasn’t until they started poking around the kitchen while I am meal prepping and started tasting some dishes that they realized they are missing out!!🤣

I am now taking requests for double batches of items and getting asked what I’m making this week 🤔It is so rewarding to witness first hand the exact reason I pursued a career in Nutrition: to show people the freedom in it healthy eating and that hope and change is possible!! .

There’s always going to be people out there watching and are going to find a way to tear you down but remember there’s always a flipside to that. There are also always people watching that you can inspire, educate, raise up and help them believe in themselves again! Be THAT person just by being you! 🤘Oh and don’t forget to eat rosemary sweet potato chips! 🍠😜

This week I was reminded that are many ways to track progress for goals that you put in place in your life. It’s up to you to decide how you want your progress measured. There is no right or wrong in terms of progress markers. The beauty is, it’s your life and your goals and you get to decide! No one else!!! .

I think one of the common hang ups when it comes to nutrition and health goals is people get mentally programmed of what the world says they should be monitoring. Like the number on your scale rules above all else or getting into that a bathing suit for vacation is the end all be all. While those are great ways to mark progress for some, others want and NEED to mark it differently.

I used to Crossfit and loved it . I trained 5 days a week so when I hired my Nutrition Coach at the time, recovering well after workouts was a huge goal of mine. We set weekly and monthly goals that I tracked and we checked in at certain times about my progress! For some, things like better blood work or more restful sleep are much more important to them. Still others want to eat more whole food choices each day while other people need to break some pretty dysfunctional thought patterns attached to food.

Right now, I personally need to have weekly down time so that I don’t feel like I am working or studying every second of every day 🙄 This includes Hot Yoga 4 days per week and eating no bake chocolate chip cookie dough bites (as shown)! 🤣

Determining these goals are an important way of making progress and also, to be true to who you! 🙌 There just ain’t no other way to be! 🤘

Alot of days this is what it looks like. None of my food “matches”!!!🙃 The thing is eating to heal and maintain good health really shouldn’t be complicated. That kind of defeats the whole purpose, right?!?! .

The health benefits of everything in my lunch serve the purpose they are meant to and don’t create a bunch of nonsense in my body that I have to deal with. Some days I nail it while other days can be.... 🤔 a cluster! 🤣
