#SalernoMaritimeTerminal receives AIA UK ‘Excellence in Design’ Commendation 2017
The American Institute of Architects (AIA) UK Chapter ‘Excellence in Design’ Awards were established over 20 years ago and recognise the highest standards of work by architects, industrial designers, urban planners, landscape architects and interior designers based in Britain.
AIA UK Vice President Alex Miller, along with Jury member and RIBA President-elect Ben Derbyshire presented the 2017 ‘Excellence in Design’ Commendation to the Salerno Maritime Terminal.
Located on the public quay that extends into Salerno’s working harbour and marina, the terminal continues the city’s relationship with the sea and establishes new links; connecting Salerno’s maritime traditions with its historic urban fabric and beyond to the hills that frame the city.
Like an oyster, the terminal’s hard, asymmetric shell protects the softer elements within; sheltering passengers from the intense Mediterranean sun during the popular tourist season. The new terminal enables the port of Salerno to increase arrivals by 500,000 additional ferry and cruise ship passengers each year, that will create up to 2,000 new jobs in the city.
Founded in 1992, the AIA UK was the institute’s first international chapter, leading the way for others in Europe, Asia and the Middle East. The AIA UK Chapter works with the Royal Institute of British Architects and its members to promote architecture and the architectural profession.
The 2016 Excellence in Design Award was presented to the #MessnerMountainMuseum #Corones by Zaha Hadid Architects.
