ACTION ALERT: The Council’s Subcommittee on Zoning & Franchises will be holding a public hearing on the Mayor's proposed #EastHarlem rezoning plan TODAY, Wed, Oct 11, 2017, beginning at 12 pm in the Council Chambers of City Hall.
From #AHSC: "As many of you are aware, the Mayor & his speaker have sought to #upzone East Harlem to build towers along all the avenues, as many as they can cram in, with no new schools or libraries or parks to make up for the density increase (at least according to the EIS). The Mayor and his people claim it is to build #affordable housing. But their own environmental impact statement says that the city scheme will incentivize developers to build some 2700 #luxury units and only 900 "affordable units". Funny how those numbers make it sound more like a luxury plan of #gentrification, one that must have real estate developers rubbing their palms together in glee and laughing all the way to the bank. They wrecked #Yorkville and now they plan to wreck East Harlem."
"Many E.Harlem residents & organizations (#MovementforJusticeinElBarrio, #ElBarrioUnited, #EastHarlemPreservation) have urged rejection of the proposal. [...]
As the approval process of destructive-style #densification grinds on, term-limited City Councilmember, #MelissaMarkViverito's office has been sending out messages urging people to come testify at the upcoming hearing next at #CityHall.
Democracy is all we have left, people, so sharpen your pencil, get out some paper, and write up quick-witted two-minute testimony."
