Happy #AgDay! We are celebrating Agriculture in Victoria today and, well, we think anything you can squeeze a lemon over counts!
Victoria produces a diverse range of wild and cultured seafood products including abalone, rock lobster, giant crab, scallops, calamari and finfish.
Our wild catch fisheries and aquaculture production has a value of nearly $90 million per annum. Victoria is Australia's largest producer of farmed trout, abalone and mussels - worth about $35 million and growing.
The Government recently allocated 65 more hectares for mussel production in the bays and pretty soon you'll be walking on fresh barra (yes barra!) we produce so much.
So grab some salt, lemon and a napkin and Omega 3 yourself silly! Fish, you can't beat it.
Look at those blue mussels waiting for a plate to be delicious on!

What a way to finish off a day's work. Borrowed camera, binoculars, the biggest bird book in the world, but most of all Meran busting at it's seams!! This is what my office looks like most days, the outdoors and lots of water... #AgricultureVictoria #Meran #living #love

It's official, Motley the soil core is fertile! That's right, maintaining a good pH and cation exchange has led to the birth of twins Oscar and James Ryan this afternoon. Congrats Motley, you'll make a rippa dad! Presumably Motley's wife is taking a well-earned rest.

Green Team students from Elsternwick Primary School met #biosecurity officers finally trapping two #redearedslider turtles. These #invasive species need to be reported to #agriculturevictoria to protect our native biodiversity. They are one of many feral species that need to be reported if spotted @delwp_vic To the students, they were thrilled to meet two Eco Heroes-thanks Adam and Jesse!

#WOFG2018 PLEASE HELP choose our bookclub book.
TELL US: what is the name of that BOOK?
.
The book, we will share, in our 'by the beach bookclub' workshop activity. Where you and your new rural friends, sit and relax with refreshments in hand, to chat about a book, you have all recently read. Perhaps we can invite the author to join us?!
.
BUT to do this, we need to know, what is the book that you want read and chat about, to other Rural Women and share ideas?
.
Perhaps @graziher could share with us the top 5 recently read, best selling Australian rural novels? Or the top 5 most read novels, by Australian Rural Women?
.
Maybe it's by author Anna Daniels - Author, Fiona McCallum - author, Fiona Palmer, Fleur McDonald, Jane Harper, Karly Lane author, Nicole Alexander, Nicole Hurley-Moore, Rachael Treasure or someone else?

Have you seen the @victorian_government's proposed reforms to planning controls for animal industries? Once again, #smallscale, #pasturedpoultry and #ethicalpork producers have been grossly undermined.
Have your say and head along to one of the information sessions held throughout October. View them at: www.planning.vic.gov.au/policy-and-strategy/planning-reform/sustainable-animal-industries

The first two sessions are happening this week in #traralgon on Thursday 6 October and #pakenham on Friday 7 October.
Check out #afsa’s response to the disappointing proposed reforms - link in bio. Full list of planning info session last here: https://www.planning.vic.gov.au/policy-and-strategy/planning-reform/sustainable-animal-industries

Like factory farming? Like CAFOs and not knowing where your food comes from? OFCOURSE YOU DON’T. But it seems that our government does.
AFSA is deeply disappointed with the new planning provisions from the @victorian_government's work on Planning for Sustainable Animal Industries. Despite our efforts to assist #agriculturevictoria and the relevant ministers in understanding the practical realities of small-scale livestock farmers, red tape will not be reduced for small-scale commercial farmers, homesteaders or hobbyists. They WILL make it easier than ever before to set up a 1000-cattle feedlot. The proposals will limit genetic diversity, and will serve to discourage farmers from undertaking the regenerative practices that many small-scale farmers pride themselves on.
We call on Minister for Agriculture @jaalapulford and Minister for Planning @richardwynnemp to explain why small-scale pastured pig and poultry farms are to be subjected to greater scrutiny and compliance costs than cattle feedlots, instead of being treated under the law like other grazing systems that rely on supplemental feed, such as the majority of Victorian beef and dairy cattle.

Consider joining @ausfoodsov as they support small scale, sustainable regenerative producers against increasingly onerous regulations not just in Victoria but also nationwide. #Repost @ausfoodsov

Exciting times. Two of our region’s farming groups - #BalliangFoodandFibreGroup and #FarmingMoorabool - have received over $50,000 in funds through Round 1 of the 2016-17 The #PortPhillipBayFund. Read all about their awesome projects on our website.

They were able to obtain the funds thanks to the support of Karen, our Regional Landcare Facilitator, whose role is funded by the #NationalLandcareProgramme

Have you checked out this week's cover stars Will and Chris Hewitt? 📰📰The father and son duo started sowing canola on their Warracknabeal property this week, after what they said had been an "ideal start" to the season. You can read more about the cropping situation around the state on our website. Link in bio. 📷: @joely_mitchell.
