Habibou Tiendrebeogo from Burkina Faso was still in her 20s when crisis struck and her husband went blind following an illness. She was faced with the responsibility of not only caring for her dependent husband, but also being the sole provider for her four young children on their two-acre farm.
New farming methods learnt as part of one of our programmes helped Habibou rise to the challenge. Alongside other women in her village, Habibou received improved maize, beans and sesame seeds to plant, as well as training that allowed her to maximise yields and earn more.
The whole family are reaping the benefits: Habibou's daughter Fatimata is amongst just 15% of girls in Burkina Faso who are attending secondary school.
Fatimata has big dreams for the future, with ambitions to go to university and become a doctor. She looks up to her mother as a role model and a hero. “I’m proud when I look at my mum. She’s a hard-working woman. She has done so well.”
