Angry elephant bull

Although elephants are generally referred to as 'gentle giants' they can be very angry sometimes. This young elephant bull was not at all happy to meet us on the @WildEyeSA Big Cats and Tuskers safari to Kenya earlier this year.

Growing up riding and training horses taught me so much about working with animals that are larger and more powerful than myself. When we don’t speak the same language but need to work together there needs to be mutual trust and respect and some kind of clear body language that transcends traditional audible language. Body language is often so small and subtle it goes unnoticed to the untrained eye but sometimes people and animals pick it up instinctually. From a young age I learned to control my thoughts or rather my bodies give away of my thoughts because many animals pick up on tension, excitement, stress, etc. I realized, and love that, I wasn’t training horses, they were training me to communicate with them & now 1/2 my life working with sharks it is the same. The small subtle movements mean so much and say so much about position and intent. The few reasons sharks bite people: mistaken identity, starvation, and competition for space/territory/food...Being able to communicate effectively through deciphering and appropriately responding to atomistic territorial body language from sharks can help reduce adverse interactions. If you go riding in Mexico please take a good look at the health of the horses before you agree to pay to ride them. Make sure they look health (no ribs) and look for sores and eye issues and ask if and where they feed and get water during the day ❤️🐎🌊

A peek into this mornings crystal clear conditions @oneoceandiving by @marina_oceanlove! A sharks swim patterns can say a lot about their position in the social hierarchy of the school. Like other sociable animals, sharks display and compete for dominance. They may put pressure on one another by swimming in close proximity or even deflect one another’s desired swim path by physically checking each other. Learn more and see for yourself @oneoceandiving or follow our research IG @oneoceanresearch! 🦈💙🦈 #sharkbehavior #sandbarsharks #sharkconservation #schoolingsharks #dominance #territorialdisplay #agonisticbehavior

Check out this gorgeous #sunrise #shark photo by #oneoceanphotographer @blakethompsonphoto! This #GalapagosShark has his #pectoralfins slightly lowered in order to help him turn & maneuver throughout the water column. Sharks can also lower these fins & arch their backs in order to make them appear larger. Size can certainly be a determinant in #dominance in the #sharkworld. Come join us @oneoceandiving to learn more about #sharkbehavior or #territorialdisplays called #agonisticbehavior. This post by our Co-Founder, Ocean Ramsey @oceanramsey was made in response to a shark attack that happened in Western Australia. What is stated here holds true for mishaps that happen when diving with sharks. Always be vigilant, read the signs, and when respect is given accordingly, respect is gained in return. - @maestro320

Here are the words of Marine Biologist and Dear Friend, Ocean Ramsey @oceanramsey - Media in #WesternAustralia is posting a second " #sharkattack " but it is unconfirmed the cause of death. Smiling cause it’s #GreatWhiteShark season!!! I LOVE these #sharks !!!! There really isn’t anyone in the world like them. Off on first trip this season. I think we might still have spots on last trip? Message Madi at @oneoceandiving office 1-808-649-001eight to check if you want to join @juansharks and I this year. My masters research looked at #sharkbehavior and #sharkbodylanguage #ethology #bodylanguage #socialbehavior #sharklanguage #agonisticbehavior #sharkbehavior #sharkbehaviour #sharkbehaviorspecialists
The very exciting thing is that some of the same sharks we tag in #islaguadalupe swim all the way out to #hawaii possibly following #whales an ideal food source for #greatwhitesharks Looking forward to sharing more with those joining us and here in our social community whenever I have reception 💙🦈💙 #helpsavesharks #savetheocean @oneoceandiving Photo by da #juanandonly #juansharks @juansharks #sharksmile

Rather than destroy #nature why not see what you can learn from it, about it, nature is a wonderful teacher if you are willing to stay quiet, look around, & observe millions of years of evolution in its raw perfection. Unfortunately there was a #surferBittenByAShark off #WesternAustralia yesterday. He survived thanks to fellow surfers quickly applying a tourniquet to control the blood loss (usually the reason the rare person dies from a rare adverse interaction.) Unfortunately the government made a rash decision to go shark hunting never minding the fact that these are highly migratory species and they could've learned more and prevented future adverse interactions by tagging the sharks to better understand movements (migration corridors and identify hunting territories and potential pupping grounds and other areas of high use by this impressive, dynamic, & important species. I am currently still in #Australia on my way back home to #Hawaii after a 10 day expedition whose goal was to deploy 3 sat tags and take biopsies to help better understand shark movements and behavior. #understandingBehavior #knowledgeISpower Information gained from studying shark behavior is a much more intelligent, sustainable, & proactive way to prevent or help mitigate future incidents. The more we learn about sharks and marine life the better we understand their role, hunting strategies, movements, etc, the more their importance is reiterated in marine ecology but also the ability for us to adapt our own behavior to reduce adverse interactions increases. I have a huge respect for sharks and the ocean and as a surfer, diver, & all around water woman I respect that I am sharing their space and entering their territory every time I slip into #theirocean #respectnature #protectnature Photo of two male #whiteSharksoffAustralia south coast at #neptuneislands #agonisticbehavior #interception #sharkbodylanguage diving with #AndrewFox #FoxSharkResearch @rodneyfoxsharkexpeditions #sharkresearch #sharkconservation #sharkbehavior #savesharks #ocean #sharks #helpsavesharks #sharkattack #sharkbite #sharkbitessurfer
