"Reading The Signs"

This post by our Co-Founder, Ocean Ramsey @oceanramsey was made in response to a shark attack that happened in Western Australia. What is stated here holds true for mishaps that happen when diving with sharks. Always be vigilant, read the signs, and when respect is given accordingly, respect is gained in return. - @maestro320

Here are the words of Marine Biologist and Dear Friend, Ocean Ramsey @oceanramsey - Media in #WesternAustralia is posting a second " #sharkattack " but it is unconfirmed the cause of death. I wanted to post this video of a White Shark displaying arching and #pectoraldropping #AgonisticBehavior (Agonistic behaviour is any social behaviour related to fighting. The term has broader meaning than aggressive behaviour because it includes threats, displays, retreats, placation, and conciliation. The term was coined by Scott and Fredericson in 1951.) #TerritorialBehavior to prove that it is absolutely possible and #reality that #WhiteSharks the majority of the time #inspect things that do not appear to be a #natural prey item. They are not puppies and I strongly advise against doing this unless this is your primary job (even I don't swim outside a cage with them without a specific purpose,) they deserve to be respected and protected for their extremely important role as the oceans #immunesystem #apexpredators are necessary for healthy #ecosystems We can #coexist #Sharkbehavior #ApexPredatorsNotMonsters #OneOcean #OceanRamsey #OneOceanResearch #SharkResearch #SharkBiologist #Ethology #AnimalBehavior #SaveTheGreatWhiteShark #StopTheCull Stop #SharkFishing #AustraliaSharkResearch #InternationalSharkProject BTW, I exited the water after observing the territorial arching and pectoral dropping. #ItsTheirOcean

Rather than destroy #nature why not see what you can learn from it, about it, nature is a wonderful teacher if you are willing to stay quiet, look around, & observe millions of years of evolution in its raw perfection. Unfortunately there was a #surferBittenByAShark off #WesternAustralia yesterday. He survived thanks to fellow surfers quickly applying a tourniquet to control the blood loss (usually the reason the rare person dies from a rare adverse interaction.) Unfortunately the government made a rash decision to go shark hunting never minding the fact that these are highly migratory species and they could've learned more and prevented future adverse interactions by tagging the sharks to better understand movements (migration corridors and identify hunting territories and potential pupping grounds and other areas of high use by this impressive, dynamic, & important species. I am currently still in #Australia on my way back home to #Hawaii after a 10 day expedition whose goal was to deploy 3 sat tags and take biopsies to help better understand shark movements and behavior. #understandingBehavior #knowledgeISpower Information gained from studying shark behavior is a much more intelligent, sustainable, & proactive way to prevent or help mitigate future incidents. The more we learn about sharks and marine life the better we understand their role, hunting strategies, movements, etc, the more their importance is reiterated in marine ecology but also the ability for us to adapt our own behavior to reduce adverse interactions increases. I have a huge respect for sharks and the ocean and as a surfer, diver, & all around water woman I respect that I am sharing their space and entering their territory every time I slip into #theirocean #respectnature #protectnature Photo of two male #whiteSharksoffAustralia south coast at #neptuneislands #agonisticbehavior #interception #sharkbodylanguage diving with #AndrewFox #FoxSharkResearch @rodneyfoxsharkexpeditions #sharkresearch #sharkconservation #sharkbehavior #savesharks #ocean #sharks #helpsavesharks #sharkattack #sharkbite #sharkbitessurfer

Smiling cause it’s #GreatWhiteShark season!!! I LOVE these #sharks !!!! There really isn’t anyone in the world like them. Off on first trip this season. I think we might still have spots on last trip? Message Madi at @oneoceandiving office 1-808-649-001eight to check if you want to join @juansharks and I this year. My masters research looked at #sharkbehavior and #sharkbodylanguage #ethology #bodylanguage #socialbehavior #sharklanguage #agonisticbehavior #sharkbehavior #sharkbehaviour #sharkbehaviorspecialists
The very exciting thing is that some of the same sharks we tag in #islaguadalupe swim all the way out to #hawaii possibly following #whales an ideal food source for #greatwhitesharks Looking forward to sharing more with those joining us and here in our social community whenever I have reception 💙🦈💙 #helpsavesharks #savetheocean @oneoceandiving Photo by da #juanandonly #juansharks @juansharks #sharksmile

Unfortunately there was a #surferBittenByAShark off #WesternAustralia yesterday. It's so sad, and while tagging any sharks in the area to study their movements or closing the beaches when it was spotted earlier that day would've been a more preventative and productive choice, Unfortunately the #australiangovernment made a rash decision to go shark hunting never minding the fact that these are highly migratory species and they could've learned more and prevented future adverse interactions by tagging the sharks to better understand movements (migration corridors and identify hunting territories and potential pupping grounds and other areas of high use by this impressive, dynamic, & important species.
