The African Darter also known as the Snake Bird, launching from the water in the Okavango Delta #snakebird #harbsdoafrica #potd

African Darter, Dinokeng, South Africa.
To make them less buoyant, and facilitate diving, the feathers of these birds aren't waterproofed with an oily secretion, as is the case with most water birds. They can therefore usually be seen drying themselves after a swim, as is the case here. .

Portrait of an African darter, known locally as a 'slangvoel' (snake-bird). The #africandarter , unlike other #waterbirds , feathers do not contain any oil and therefor are not waterproof. ‘Because of this, the bird is less positively buoyant and its diving capabilities are enhanced. After diving for fish, the feathers can become waterlogged. In order to be able to fly and maintain heat insulation, it needs to dry its feathers. Thus the African darter is often seen sitting along the waterside spreading its wings and drying its feathers in the wind and the sun.’ 🍃
