"Soul of a Nation" exhibition is brilliant. An exhibition of resistance art and culture of African Americans.
These days i'm reading and studying more and more about racism and racist ideas in America. I have always felt in debt to African American culture, art and music because I feel like it was something which helped keep me sane in Iran. The world would be such a boring shit place without diversity and especially without Black music, art and culture. Imagine a world without jazz, blues and soul, without Maya Angelou and Gwyndolen Brooks, a world without Nina Simone and Ray Charles, a world without funk and hip hop and rap, a world without Techno and House! A world without Martin Luther King, Malcolm X. Angela Davis. It would be a world without soul. The contribution of African Americans to the world's music and culture is remarkable. They have always been more progressive and inclusive than the rest. Two of the most progressive and inclusive subcultures; House and Techno stem from this community. Even super bands like the Rolling Stones and Led Zepplin owe their music to the likes of Howling Wolf and John Lee Hooker and Muddy Waters. We all owe so much to the African American community; their passion, vibrancy and soul fuels so much creativity and progress all over the world, even in Iran. So if u are in #London go vist this exhibition in the Tate Modern.
