Fights in Moria, the vulnerable are the victims
The camp is overcrowded and that leads to tension. Last Friday, big fights erupted between different nationalities inside the camp. Large groups of people including many families with children fled the camp out of fear for their safety. They are now being taken care of in other locations. Our medical team has treated about 20 injured in cooperation with Doctors Without Borders.
Medical coordinator Fons says, "The situation was still highly flammable when we arrived. Working from our own medical clinic inside the camp was too dangerous. This is why we followed the emergency protocols for these situations and started working from the clinic of Doctors Without Borders, outside the camp. Together we have treated about 20 patients, 8 of which have been taken to the hospital. None of them was in mortal danger." In the camp, there are about three times as many people as the camp was built for. Frustrations lead to tensions between different groups who live packed together in a small area, sometimes for up to a year. It's incredibly sad that it is the families, the children and the vulnerable people who carry the consequences of these fights. Those who are looking for a safe home for their families and do not particpate in any form of violence are once again on the run.
