Not just one of the greatest showmen who ever lived, P.T. Barnum (of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus) was one of the world's best copywriters with his mastery of the selling power of words.
The Feejee Mermaid of 1842 is just one of his many brilliant spectacles (which is roughly a young monkey sewn to a fish's tail and covered with paper-mache). Barnum knew how to take big ideas to another level, having leased the specimen, engaged the press by hiring a fake historian, and even distributed thousands of pamphlets detailing its authenticity. The justification for this, of course, was not to fool people but to draw crowds, to his great success.
