Winter colds seem to be going around this week. Even between coughing fits, this 1920s ad catches our eye. Maybe it's the bold colors and simple shapes. Made by German-born artist Lucian Bernhard (1883–1972), this ad diverges from Art Nouveau. Instead of emulating flowing lines and harmony with nature, Bernhard's Modernism embraced the new urbanism and fought to attract the viewer's eye amidst a barrage of advertising posters.

In the 1960’s, all the experts thought that the VW would be a bust in the US market.

They had ties to the Nazi’s, were an odd, compact shape, and had limited features when fully loaded vehicles were ALL the rage.

BUT, this was just the beginning for this iconic brand.

The DDB Ad Agency designed a campaign that was as simple as the car itself, using short, silly, self deprecating headlines like “think small.” And guess what?

They got EVERYONE talking. What people thought would NEVER sell in the US became a major hit. (I mean, I think we can all spot a VW Bug from miles away!!) The moral of the story: the right advertising can sell anything if you can get people laughing and talking. How can you inspire your community more? 📷: @Petals_and_ash

Another cool piece of advertising history spotted at Nebraska Sign last friday- the chef guy from the McDonalds sign- circa: whenever a burger cost 15 cents! #vintage #signs #neon #burgers #adhistory

This hat sold soup. It was worn by dancer and actress Ann Miller as part of an elaborate, sequined costume in a commercial for Heinz's Great American Soup in 1971. In the commercial (which you NEED to watch on YouTube), she demonstrated her tap-dancing skills on an eight-foot soup can.
If such an ostentatious, flagrantly patriotic ensemble seems out of place in the cynical Vietnam War period, it perfectly matches the jaunty tone of director Stan Freberg's commercial, intended as a parody of the musical spectacles that Miller specialized in during her film career. She's like a female Uncle Sam in the commercial.

FLASHBACK FRIDAY ⏳// When the 1960s hit, Coca-Cola faced a challenge: Pepsi was gaining market share of younger consumers with ads aimed at the "Pepsi Generation." One of Coke's many responses was this ad, which appeared in Life magazine in July of 1963. HAPPY FRIDAY EVERYONE!

#BirthOfTheHashtag! Nowadays, #SocialMedia is a vital marketing tool for every business, and #hashtags serve as links to customers by boosting their #brands' visibility. On August 23, 2007, #ChrisMessina posted the first #Tweet suggesting to use the symbol. Two years later, #Twitter hyperlinked all words preceded with a #, making the feature official. The Hashtag was then born!

It's a damp day in D.C. and we're feeling a bit like this little adventurer. Cozy by a small fire, the little boy munches on a Uneeda Milk Biscuit and some ZuZu Ginger Snaps. While the kiddo stays dry in his trusty yellow raincoat, the biscuits are also protected. This advertisement is highlighting the inner seal, which keeps his snack dry and fresh.
If the rain gets you down today, pull over your canoe and pause for a nice crispy snack. Happy Thursday, history fans!
