I’m sure at some point we have all seen those big fancy letters at the beginning of a paragraph, right? Well, those are not just called big fancy letters, they are known as drop caps. A drop cap is literally just a “large initial capital that extends down through several lines”.
Large initials have been around since the 8th century, when they were used in manuscripts and several art forms through Britain and Ireland. Sometimes they could even take a whole page for themselves!
Drop caps used to be heavily decorated, but with the use of computers they started becoming less and less embellished. Almost reaching a point where they were just a larger size letter. Fortunately, lettering and typeface design have been deeply influencing overall design, so drop caps have been making sort of a come back. For instance, take a look at the images posted: They are all part of #dailydropcap, a project done by the amazing @jessicahische on 2009, where she did a drop cap on a daily basis until she reached 12 alphabets, pretty cool, huh?
You can see some of her drop caps here, or the full set on www.dailydropcap.com
