So, two years ago today was opening night of my favorite show I've ever been a part of. A play with music called "Are You There God? It's me, Karen Carpenter." And also coincidentally it was my first drag gig ever.
I had been getting into drag for about eight or nine months previous, but just going out to bars or parties. But this was the first time I was ever on stage in drag, paid to be anywhere in drag or the name Abbey Roads was listed anywhere.
I love that my drag career started with this show. It brought me my love of The Carpenters, and some of my best friends in Seattle. And also set a precedent that my theater training is important to use while performing in any avenue, including drag.
I got to play a twelve year old jewish girl named Gretchen who loved hot dogs, cats and explained how periods worked to her clique of friends since she was the first to get it. I mean, cmon!!! Thank you to my now best friend @butchalice for directing this weird, amazing show, and taking a chance on an inexperienced drag queen making both her Seattle drag and theater debuts. Thank you @danewhitlock for writing this breathtaking piece. And thank you @seattlestageright for creating this beautiful sandbox for us to play in. "And the only explanation I can find, is the love that I've found ever since you've been around; your love's put me at the top of the world." 🎀🦄💋🌸🐚💦🌊🏳️🌈👄👠
