In light of my last post on the wonder of the ocean, I was inspired to share a bit about these beautiful mollusks, something a lot of us crystal lovers are likely to have on our altars or in sacred spaces. ✨
These incredible sea snails are prized for their meat and their beauty. From the outside, they're humble and easy to miss. On the inside, is a rainbow of iridescence. Their shells, coated with nacre (like mother of pearl) have been harvested for human use in jewelry, buttons, and knives for thousands of years by many cultures. They play an important ecological role of maintaining habitat by controlling algal density. But now their populations are in sharp decline (as are most sea animal and fish populations) due to over-fishing and a few species are endangered. Researchers have found several reasons for this: the abalone has a short larval period, meaning it doesn't repopulate quickly. They grow very slowly and they have a very long life span. The majority of abalone you'll find now is farmed in California, but that doesn't mean its OK. Fish farming has its own repercussions. .
I purchased this abalone shell, like most crystal enthusiasts, for smudging and ritual use. I love it dearly and will cherish it, but I won't be purchasing more or selling them in the shop. If I'm ever able to find a sustainable source of abalone shells, you'll be the first to know! Until then, let's enjoy what we have and take good care of it.
