FARNBOROUGH: According to type certificate documentation, Airbus has received ETOPS 180 minute certification for the A350-1000.

The aircraft was certified in 2017 with ETOPS 120min and its Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97 engine was certified in August of the same year with ETOPS 420.

It was October 15th, 2014 that the A350-900 received ETOPS 370 certification, allowing it to fly six hours on one engine. This made the aircraft the first ever approved for "ETOPS beyond 180" before EIS.

The RR Trent XWB family recently achieved two million flying hours, just shortly after the company delivered the 500th engine.

The engine has a staggering 99.9% dispatch reliability and has never had an inflight shutdown.

Today's the day! Cathay Pacific has taken delivery of their first A350-1000!

MSN 118 was handed over to the airline during a delivery ceremony involving airline officials and Airbus employees.
Registered as B-LXA, this aircraft will now temporarily operate domestic flights for familiarisation before entering long haul services out of Hong Kong later this year.

Cathay will demonstrate the range and performance of the A350-1000 by operating the airline's new non-stop route from Hong Kong to Washington DC in September. Flight time is expected to be 17 hours - the longest out of Hong Kong.

Chief customer and commercial officer Paul Loo mentioned in a statement that the aircraft has an "incredible range, is remarkably fuel efficient and quiet, provides passengers with an unsurpassed cabin environment, and has extremely attractive operating economics". Photos - Airbus.

Information from Cathay Pacific A350-1000 delivery conference:

During multiple presentations, Airbus A350 marketing head, Marisa Lucas, stated that the newly added 316t weight variant frame was made under Cathay's request. She also added that the frame is capable of doing HKG-MIA, but we'll have to wait and see the exact specifics for that one.

The 316t variant will allow Cathay Pacific and other airlines that operate the variant to fly an additional 450+ nautical miles and carry 5.5+t of additional cargo. This is a significant range increase, especially considering more weight variants are expected to arrive later on, further increasing it.

Airbus has confirmed that there will be no new A350-1000 operator in 2018. No information has been provided on which operator will receive their A350-1000 next.

The last thing Airbus wants is more engine problems, especially on their A350 and A330neo lineup, primarily because they only have one engine option.

Rolls-Royce has announced that they're confident that the blade durability problems on the Trent 1000 won't carry over to the Trent XWB or Trent 7000 engines.

Maintenance and overall curiosity checks performed by RR have come out with no evidence of blade cracking or turbine erosion. Chief executive Warren East pointed out that a different design process and more modern tools were used to develop the Trent XWB and 7000 engines.

Despite the Trent 7000 being derived from the Trent 1000, RR is confident no major hiccups will occur during service entry.

The Trent 7000 engine will enter service with TAP Portugal before the Trent 1000 fix is released. By that time only a small amount of 7000s will be delivered, making it an easy fix and minimising airline disruption should something occur.

A330neo early operators have stated briefly that they are not concerned about any possible problems and that RR has been excellent with any questions and support.

Using an A350-1000 development aircraft, Airbus flight test pilots have been testing the new feature.

The plan is to outfit touchscreen displays on the two outboard screens and the central multi-function display. Pilots already have control of these displays using keyboard and cursor control units but Airbus states that touch is a no brainier, offering easier navigation, pinch and zoom functionality, familiarity with tablet devices and multi-touch, allowing both pilots to interact with the information simultaneously.

A350 XWB marketing director, François Obé, has told media that no delivery date has been set but that it's coming soon. Customers are already lined up to be the first to operate the cockpit feature.

Although Boeing has the 777x cockpit fitted with touch displays, Airbus has mentioned the idea long before it came into tuition. Boeing will deliver the 777x with touchscreens as a standard option.

Five years ago today, the Airbus A350 XWB successfully completed its maiden flight!

Initially an aircraft that airlines turned their back on, the A350 has developed into a technological marvel, featuring a large amount of composite components, advanced avionics and incredible passenger amenities.

With 174 aircraft in service, the A350 has gained an impressive amount of positive feedback from airlines and passengers all around the world. Service entry saw no major problems and the aircraft performed as intended.

The Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines offer airlines a powerful, quiet engine that burns through significantly less fuel. Although similar to the Trent 1000 and Trent 900, the engine and the A350 feature a bleed system, unlike the Boeing 787.

Five years may not seem too much but Airbus has been hammering away at constantly improving the aircraft. Multiple aerodynamic upgrades are set to roll out, software and avionic modifications and additions have been implemented and soon we'll be seeing engine performance upgrades.

These improvements and customer feedback have lead Airbus to develop and plan for additional family members, with the -900ULR set to enter service this year and a -1000ULR and a -1000 stretch currently being looked at.

Comment below, have you been on an A350? What did you think?

An order for 15 Airbus A350-900s for an undisclosed customer has been logged in Airbus' order book for last month.

The deal is the first A350 order in nine months, with the last being that of United Airlines.

The deal increases Airbus' widebody orders to 17 this year, with a single SAS A330-300 and A330-200 tanker on the list too.

Considering the Farnborough Air Show is coming up shortly, we may see the order announced there.

You may think Airbus is struggling with their widebody program. They aren't. The A350 is and was intended to be a 777 competitor. With plenty of 777s nearly reaching their use by date, the A350 is expected to receive a healthy amount of orders over the next couple of years, as will the 777x.

Boeing has the fantastic 787, but that aircraft is a completely different frame with different objectives.

Group Dubreuil, the parent company for French Bee and Air Caraïbes, has finalized the lease at ALC to take two additional A350-900s.

French Bee and Air Caraïbes will each receive one aircraft in 2019.

The new aircraft will feature the same cabin as their existing product.

French Bee will transfer their single A330-300 (F-HPUJ) to Air Caraïbes next year, leaving them with three A350-900s and a single A350-1000 scheduled for delivery in 2020.

Air Caraïbes will retire two A330-300s (F-OONE and F-GOTO), with the first A350-1000 delivery in 2019.

Both airlines have received excellent feedback on their A350s, with passengers and crew praising its quiet cabin, pressurisation and space. Operational performance has been exceptionally good, with fuel burn better than expected and maintenance intervals lower than predicted.

Why is the A350-900 test aircraft at Wellington Airport, New Zealand?

Airbus and Wellington Airport agreed to let test pilots perform various short runway performance tests.
The crew touched down yesterday (4th of June) but have not been able to conduct the full tests as of yet. Usually the problem at Wellington is too much rain and wind. Airbus wants more of it.

The tests will include multiple takeoffs and landings using various fuel and cargo loads and weather patterns.

The testing has nothing to do with the planned runway extension. The primary goal is to add to Airbus' huge database of performance information and to identify the capabilities the A350-900 could offer to customers in need of short runway performance.

As @djsaviation said in his latest video on the topic, this visit may be to strengthen the proposed performance capabilities Airbus is offering to Air New Zealand.
