If we can change the way we approach our stress we can improve how we respond to it rather than react. Authors, Jamieson, Nock, and Mendes (2012) of Harvard University and University of California San Francisco share in their research on stress that, “changing the way we think about our bodily responses can improve our physiological and cognitive reactions to stressful events” (p. 417). They send this point home more poignantly by quoting William James, “The greatest weapon against stress is our ability to choose one thought over another” (in Jamieson, Nock, and Mendes, 2012, p. 417).

Following Yesterdays post re: Knee OA in the prevalence of Marathon runners vs the General US population, I thought an interesting read would be what should our exercise prescription be for the population struggling with OA and what exactly would be most effective?

It didn't take much to find that there is a ton of research regarding this subject. Luckily a recent review performed by Golightly, Allen and Caine (2012), did most of the hard work for me.

Analyzing a variety of different exercises(over a vast amount of studies); land based exercise, Aerobic programs, strength training (High vs Low resistance, Dynamic vs isometric), Balance and Neuromuscular Training (Tai Chi, Vibration Training, proprioceptive), Water based and Exercises for Severe OA.

Without going into too much detail into the statistical analysis is was very clear to see that really any of the above interventions, if compliant (Averaging 3 x weekly over a 3 month period), proved effective in improving patient functional ability and a reduction in pain when it comes to Mild-Moderate OA; To the point at which it is comparable to the same effectiveness of simple analgesia and NSAIDS.

So whether it is a case of going for a 20 minute walk or bike ride, going to the gym, taking part in a tai chi class or utilizing the hydrotherapy pool, all seem effective.
The difference in selection will be down to the individual. If a patient walks in with an idea of starting some form of exercise then it would be prudent to encourage and facilitate the participation of that activity. Giving information on pacing and what to expect following the activity and reassuring that a potential short term increase in pain does not mean damage and to stick to it- perhaps with the incorporation of analgesia to get over the hump to allow further compliance.

1. Jangan dibaca seluruhnya cape!, kalau bhs. Inggris siapin kamus online/electronic (jangan di google translate). Kalau gk ngerti2 baca berulang2 (gak ada proses ngerti yg instan) > baru nanya ke yg lbh paham (jadi biasain jangan nanya bener2 gk tau, tapi nanya diskusi).
2. Baca Abstraknya dulu
3. Kepoin Metodologinya (ini sbg judgment kalau kit menemukan jurnal dgn tema sama tapi hasil berbeda)
4. Kalau kita sangat kepo baru baca introduction-discussnya. Inget kalau mau ngutip reference dari isi jurnal cari reference acuan yg dia pakai rata2 skrg udh online-kebanyakan free.

Ini salah satu ngeresume jurnal > Judulnya Efek menghafalkan Al-Quran pada lansia, dia kepo apa ada effectnya gak sih menghafalkan Al-Quran sama kesehatan. Perlu pembuktian empirik kan, nah jadi dirancanglah penelitian cross sectional pada orang yg lanjut usia (> 55 tahun) yg rajin ngapalin Al-Quran (rata 2 hafal 3-4 juz, kita?), Assessment psikologis stress jg diukur. My youngest said to me the other day, "oh my gosh, I am not going to end up like you some day, am I?" It is the one thing I have avoided addressing since the girls and I were all diagnosed with hypermobility type EDS (not the same,as being hypermobile). Having a lifelong joint condition sucks. Having 1 that is only now being studied and understood is even more challenging, especially if you are a young athlete.

I am pretty sure my hips got so bad (even with hip dysplasia) because of the problems with my body's collagen production (the core of the condition) - my labrums were shredded to non existent at time of each surgery.

My oldest is built like a runner, but she told the physical therapist and me recently that she hurts all the time. Exercise is important for our condition, but it has to be managed. Most coaches, trainers, fitness instructors have no clue what to do to help them because they are outliers in the athlete population.
Recently, the EDS criteria was officially changed again internationally. More education to doctors is necessary. Those with hEDS have more problems w/scoliosis, migraines, IBS, injectable anesthesia, etc than general population. Most times, those affected just don't talk about issues they have because sometimes people think they are making stuff up. They often need modifications in exercise due to frequent sprains, etc - my youngest has resprained her ankle at least 7 times (she's only 10). So the answer for my kids is that they are getting the best care possible at Cincinnati Children's- rheumatology, ongoing physical therapy and occupational therapy, neurology, behavioral therapy (for pain management) and gastroenterology. Even our dentists have to be in the know due to potential anesthesia probs. And now, my ob/gyn has confirmed my ligaments around my uterus aren't holding everything together right (and they are recommending surgery). Hopefully, my kids will see a cure before big problems happen in their 40s.

Sleep is very important!

A study in 2004 (link in comments) found that poor sleep lead to disruption in the hunger regulating hormones.

Specially the hormone that signals hunger was significantly increased, while the hormone that signals fullness was significantly decreased.

Take home: lack of sleep can affect how hungry you feel, and how long it takes you to feel full whilst eating.

Polyphenol
Thế polyphenols là gì ? Polyphenols là chất hóa học tự nhiên rất dễ được tìm thấy ở các loại thực vật như cây, trái, hạt và rau củ. Trong các nghiên cứu khoa học về phương pháp cải thiện tình trạng da, Polyphenols được xem là chất hóa học hiệu quả và tiết kiệm nhất.

Đặc biệt, trà hoặc lá trà chứa thành phần cao Polyphenols (Greentea Polyphenol - GTPP), cụ thể là Monomeric flavanols còn được gọi là catechins. Các hợp chất chính bao gồm EGCG, EGC, ECG và EC.
Tia cực tím
Tia cực tím (Ultra-violet radiation - UVR) được xem là một trong những tác nhân tự nhiên lớn nhất gây hại đến làn da. UVR có thể gây viêm da, lão hóa và ung thư da sau một thời gian dài không sử dụng kem chống nắng hoặc sử dụng không đúng cách. Mặc dù làn da có khả năng đề kháng tự nhiên chống oxi hóa và các tác nhân xấu từ môi trường, nhưng quá trình phơi nhiễm UVR quá mức và lâu dài sẽ gây ra tình trạng mất cân bằng oxi hóa (antioxidant stress). Từ đó, các gốc tự do oxi hóa (reactive oxygen species - ROS) được hình thành và gây hại đến các chất proteins, lipids và DNA, dẫn đến các bệnh về da, ức chế miễn dịch và ung thư da.

Tác dụng của GTPPs

Trong các thí nghiệm in vitro (trong ống nghiệm), các GTPPs có tác dụng làm giảm các hoạt chất của ROS, cải thiện số lượng và hình dạng các tế bào nguyên bào sợi (fibroblast cell). Ngoài ra, EGCG còn hạn chế các chất sản sinh từ UVR, khôi phục các enzyme chống oxy hóa biểu bì. Từ đó khôi phục khả năng oxy hóa cho da.

☁️ Utilising Reps In Reserve (RIR) ☁️

☁️ There are plenty of different ways in which we can program intensity (weight), however an RPE scale is a simple and effective way that can be used without having to work out %RM⚫️

☁️ Reps of reserve is an adapted RPE scale. It works by estimating the total number of reps you feel you have left per set before reaching complete failure⚫️

☁️ A review by Helms et al (2016) compiled literature on various studies of RIR. One of the main factors of all papers was that RIR was shown to not only be more applicable set per set compared to a traditional RPE scale but also more accurate in estimating the point of failure at the relevant intensity (I’ll post the link to the study below)

☁️ One of the biggest advantages of RIR is you can adjust intensity on a set per set basis. For example in the video, this was my final set of military press 4x5 for an RIR of 1. As you can see the final rep was a bit wobbly so if I had an additional sets to complete I could back off the intensity in order to ensure a RIR of 1⚫️

What's the most dangerous snake in the United States? There's some good evidence that populations of Timber Rattlesnakes from north Florida/south Georgia are top contenders. Unlike most individuals throughout its large range, individuals from the southeastern extent of their range possess what is known as a Type II venom, which is predominantly neurotoxic in composition. Scientists have named the neurotoxic component of horridus venom, "Canebrake Toxin." Researchers have noted its similarity to the neurotoxins in snakes like the Mojave and South American Rattlesnakes. Combine that with the large potential size and venom yield of "Canebrakes," and you're looking at one dangerous snake. This doesn't, however, mean that they are out to get you (for all the non-snake people reading this). Taking simple precautions and leaving snakes alone will go a long way to keeping you safe in snake country. Decellularisation is a tissue engineering technique used to isolate the extracellular matrix (ECM) of a tissue from its inhabiting cells. ‘The process of decellularisation is done by placing a normal healthy heart from a recently deceased individual - into a specialised vessel for about a week - allowing for chemicals and detergents to wash away its DNA, lipids, soluble proteins, sugars & all other cellular material. Stem cells from the recipient are then used to repopulate the ‘ghost heart’.
