A year ago, during my MPhil, my poetry professor Colette Bryce asked me how many languages I spoke. I told her I could speak and write in Punjabi, English and Hindi. I added that I was fluent in Kangri/Pahari too, the dialect spoken in the region of Himachal Pradesh where I grew up. I explained if one had to write in Kangri, that had to be done in Hindi since it was a dialect. It didn't have its own script. That was the moment when she asked me to read this poem. I hadn't read anything like this before. This poem addressed a multitude of diasporas better than anything. Many I know will agree with this. Here's that poem "Hill Speak" from Zaffar Kunial's book of poems "Us". Please please please, read this book, you won't regret. #morepoetryisneeded #ZaffarKunial @zaffarkunial

Zaffar Kunial’s new poetry collection Us is out now. Here the start of his poem
The Wardrobe

might be a good name for a bookshop, small but oddly ongoing,
the kind you’d happen upon, and enter, perhaps alone, perhaps
not, in a long grown-up coat.

Live video of performance from our recent project: a poetic transition from the conceptual silence of John Cage’s 4’33” (1952) to Arvo Pärt’s new aesthetic “Tintinabulli” (little bells) born in his Für Alina (1976). Here performed by Annie Yim, accompanied by the recorded voice of poet Zaffar Kunial’s new work in response - “Sunlight’”. #darknesstolight

Thrilled to receive a great review of our recent multimedia Conceptual Concert for music/poetry/art, The Poet Speaks: From Debussy to Pärt, for live piano + recorded voices. ‘An intriguing and highly original concert by pianist Annie Yim’.
Stay tuned for our live video! Our gratitude to Arvo & Nora Pärt, and the Arvo Pärt Centre for their help in our research for this project.
.
One of the pieces was Arvo Pärt’s Für Alina, an iconic piano piece written in 1976. ‘Poet Zaffar Kunial wrote “Sunlight” in response to the music, a short yet meaningful poem which perfectly complemented the simplicity and profundity of Pärt’s writing’. Philip Glass told the story of his first meeting with Allen Ginsberg, “In 1988…I happened to run into Allen Ginsberg at St. Mark’s Bookshop in New York and asked him if he would perform with me. We were in the poetry section, and he grabbed a book from the shelf and pointed out Wichita Vortex Sutra. The poem, written in 1966 and reflecting the anti-war mood of the times, seemed highly appropriate for the occasion. I composed a piano piece to accompany Allen’s reading, which took place at the Schubert Theater on Broadway.” Ginsberg spent three weeks in Wichita, Kansas writing this poem in 1966 in the midst of the Vietnam War. His original performance with Glass included the second half of this epic anti-war poem. In our version, Ed Baker has formed a new collage of the words of Ginsberg, choosing sections from the poem to highlight his own response as an American to Ginsberg’s poem and Glass’s music, which rings true today.

“Each work is no more than a few minutes long, and yet contains a microcosm of the composer’s unique stamp, carrying far more than meets the eyes and ears. The poets’ voices shine through these piano compositions as an inspiring light.” The Poet Speaks: From Debussy to Pärt, for live piano and recorded voices, 16 March 2018.

Yesterday’s performance of The Poet Speaks: From Debussy to Pärt. Looking & listening to Versöhnung (Reconciliation) by poet Else Lasker Schüler, which was the original inspiration for our multimedia piece:
.

There will be a large star falling into my lap...
Let us wake this night

Pray in the languages
Which are incised like harps

Let us reconcile this night to us -
So much God overflowing ... Our hearts are children,
They want to rest sleepysweet.

And our lips want to kiss each other
Why are you shy?

Does not my heart border on yours -
Your blood always colours my cheeks red.

Let us reconcile this night to us,
When we caress each other we don’t die

There will be a large star falling into my lap.

Definitely worth braving the weather for.
Thank you for the invite.
OMG look who I found there! Soul of Bradford's untold past is poet storyteller @irene_lofthouse :)

“I wrote the poem so it looked almost like a postage stamp, something very small, but hopefully able to carry much more. Each line can be read after a pause or as a continuous train of thought. The image of a ‘stamp’ of light on the floor seemed to fit with my own response to Arvo Pärt’s music, which made me think of light footsteps and echoes of light.” Acclaimed poet Zaffar Kunial, whose collection “Us” will be published this summer by Faber, wrote “Sunlight” in response to Arvo Pärt’s iconic Für Alina (1976) specially for today’s performance.
The poem will be performed together with the music as part of a multimedia installation @cityuniversitylondon concert series at Performance Space, 1pm (for 1.10). We are excited that 50 exquisite booklets with Zaffar’s poem handmade by book artist Pauline Rafal will be available at the concert, all proceeds go to support the generous contribution of the poet.

Join us tomorrow Friday 16 March, 1pm at City, University of London - link in bio - for a new version of #JohnCage 4’33” as a multimedia installation with poetry, light, sound. It forms part of a larger music programme of works combining music and poetry: The Poet Speaks: From Debussy to Pärt. 4’33” was performed here by Annie Yim, silently reading a poem A Kind of Silence by Ed Baker - Something divided by nothing/becomes everything/but only in the limit/a limit that’s never reached.... Shown here in the company of Alphabets by #JasperJohns @ordovasgallery in 2016, with dress kindly provided by @erdem. Programme of works mutually inspired between music, poetry and art. As the most performed living composer for the seventh consecutive year, Arvo Pärt’s path to find his own voice was a difficult one. He eventually broke through a long period of silent searching with this piano composition Für Alina (1976). The piece has a quiet purity and lightness as freshly fallen snow. #musicartlondon #piano #poetry #march16 #ThePoetSpeaks #london #snow #March16 #recordedvoices #performance #poets #composers Poets: #Baudelaire #Betrand #ElseLaskerSchüler #AllenGinsburg #ZaffarKunial #EdBaker Composers: #Debussy #Ravel #ArvoPärt #JohnCage #CherylFrancesHoad #philipglass #pianist #AnnieYim #symbolist #minimalist #conceptual #contemporary

Estonian composer Arvo Pärt’s iconic piano piece Für Alina (1976) marked the beginning of his ‘tintinnabuli’ (little bells) style, after almost a decade of silence. This piece inspired a new work by acclaimed poet Zaffar Kunial called Sunlight (2018) to be premiered on March 16. Wonderful morning rehearsing with the brilliant technical team at the Performance Space @cityuniversitylondon for our next event ‘The Poet Speaks’ for live piano and recorded voices. Here is an excerpt of Ravel’s Scarbo(1908) inspired by a poem from Gaspard de la Nuit by Aloysius Betrand. ‘Oh! how often have I heard and seen him, Scarbo, when at midnight the moon glitters in the sky like a silver shield on an azure banner strewn with golden bees!’ Watch this space for more about this project!
