Iron IIIAB, Found in Australia, 1947

Australia’s largest meteorite crater is also one of the most spectacular and best preserved on Earth. The impactor is thought to have hit our planet at least 300,000 years ago. Wolf Creek specimens are weathered into strange and intriguing amorphous shapes, display an attractive rose and ginger patina, and are one of our planet’s oldest known meteorites. Hunting at the crater is now illegal, and this extremely difficult-to-acquire meteorite is a must for collectors of crater-forming irons. Although we currently are out-of-stock on Wolf Creek, more specimens are on their way. Please ask to be added to our reservation list.

Day 14 - Wolfe Creek Crater
So....As we turned onto the access road, we saw a car and caravan pulled over. As we got closer we could see the caravan had lost a rear wheel. The driver was nowhere to be seen, so we headed off down the track. As we exited the next morning we found a young family replacing the rear wheel. We stopped to see if they needed anything. Turns out they were driving out the day before when they lost the wheel. But... it wasn't their caravan. The owner had been bitten by a Death Adder at the camp ground a few nights before and had to be rushed into town where he was airlifted to hospital...Poor guy... Crazy.... We'll be wearing shoes in camp now!

Wolfe Creeke 😳😆 It’s pretty cool to stand at the top and see the exact spot where a meteor crashed to Earth some 300,000 years ago! When you walk into the middle the landscape is completely different - changes from rocky/spinifex to trees, sandy/salty dirt and mulla mulla flowers. All in all a pretty amazing spot to visit 😃

Gandimalal. (Wolfe creek crater) ⛰🐍⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Jaru and Walmajarri country.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Jaru legend tells the story of two rainbow snakes moving across the land to form jurrabalarn (Sturt creek) and ngurriny (Wolfe creek). Gandimalal is the place where one of the snakes came out of the ground. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Walmajarri legend tells of the rainbow snake Kariputa who came to Gandimalal. The crater rim is where the snake pushed up from the ground. The central area of the crater is salty because the snake cane from the sea. Kariputa still lies under the crater. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Wolfe creek is the second largest crater in the world, its formation is due to a meteorite weighing thousands of tonnes impacting the area 300,000 years ago. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It truly is an impressive site. Unfortunately our drone decided to break just before checking it out, limiting a better perspective from above 🤷🏻‍♂️🛸 .

300,000 years ago a 50,000 tonne space rock smashed into the desert here. The 2nd largest meteorite crater in the world, almost a Kilometre across, seen here from a few thousand feet up. 💫💥☄️ #meteorite #wolfecreek #wolfecreekcrater #westernaustralia #anotherdayinwa #outbackaustralia #aviation #cirruslife #cirrussr22 #privatepilot #pilotseye #instapilot #generalaviation #wingview
