On this day in 1990, director William Peter Blatty released 'The Exorcist III', which is, to this day, my favourite horror film of all time.
The film starred George C. Scott (taking over the role of Lt. Kinderman which was played by Lee J. Cobb in the original 'Exorcist' film), Ed Flanders (diddly!), Brad Dourif, Jason Miller, and Nicol Williamson.
Blatty is the man who wrote the original 'The Exorcist' novel which the movie was based on. After the production company Morgan Creek made 'Exorcist II: The Heretic' (which was appallingly awful), Blatty decided to write a sequel to his first story that ignored the second film. He would later direct it into 'Exorcist III' himself.
The movie picks up many years after the events of the first film, when a number of grisly murders take place in Georgetown, featuring the M.O. (which had never been made public) of a previously executed murderer. Meanwhile, a man who looks exactly like Father Karras is discovered in a psychiatric hospital.
The final act of the movie does get a little problematic, due to studio interference, but it truly is one of the scariest movies I've seen (while also having some wonderfully dry humour), and Dourif and Scott are absolutely incredible.
