The Florida Project (Sean Baker, 2017)
Made on a budget of $2 million, Sean Baker's independent film The Florida Project, tells the story of six year old Moonee (Brooklyn Prince) and her single Mum Halley (Bria Vinaite) during a summers break from school.
It would be easy to say how brilliant Willem Dafoe is in the film and although he plays a more varied character than he usually plays, Dafoe is not the stand out star of the film. Bria Vinaite is brilliant as Halley, a single mother who despite being involved with crime and prostitution, genuinely cares about her daughter. However, the star of the film is Brooklynn Prince. The six year old manages to give one of the most genuine performances of a child actor in film. For not one second will the audience doubt that Moonee is a real child, rather than a character created for the film.
The Florida Project is paced very slowly, however this fits with the narrative of the film. It could be argued that there is no actual story however, The Florida Project's story is that of a mother/daughter relationship and how it is destroyed by the actions of those involved.
It's a shame that The Florida Project will probably not get the exposure that it deserves. The film, although not amazing, is definitely a must watch. The Florida Project is not for everyone, but is a very strong film.
Quote of the film:
Moonee: The doctor said we got asthma and we gotta eat ice cream
