Shadow of the Vampire. Funky little horror fictionalizing F. W. Murnau’s process in making Nosferatu where Max Schreck really is a vampire, or just REALLY good at method acting, but in any case he’s destroyed by his scene ending, only living till he has no more scenes to shoot, or I think that’s how it goes? Messed up kind of movie.
But let’s just talk about how great these actors are: John Malkovich, Cary Elwes, Udo Kier, and Willem DaFoe. 4 of my favourite actors all in one movie. They’re always there just doing small and interesting films. Never A list but everyone loves them like A listers. Especially DaFoe. Can’t help but smile whenever he’s on screen.
And Udo. Wonderful wonderful Udo. Here’s a story: Astron-6. You know them? They made small little horror spoofs like Manborg, Father’s Day, and The Editor. Well they’re Winnipeg boys like moi, so one day they gave a little talk in my film class at uni. Just talked about how Troma screwed them over and how difficult it was making The Editor. But one thing I... remember, was when they said they had 2 completely opposite actor types. They said Paz de la Huerta was the worst, just a total diva, refused to work on days, just taking total advantage of their small production because she used to be on a semi-big show once. But when they worked with Udo Kier, there was no air conditioning, and the small room they were filming in was getting hot, problems kept delaying the scene, so everyone is sweating, even poor Udo waiting for everything to be set, but they said he couldn’t have been more nice and patient and understanding. They had nothing but nice things to say about Udo. I always knew he must have been a great guy, so I was so happy to hear that story. #nowwatching #cinephile #lovemovies #cinema #movies #movie #film #cinephilecommunity #shadowofthevampire #horror #horrormovies #nosferatu #vampire #johnmalkovich #caryelwes #udokier #willemdafoe
