Cicadas spend most of their lives underground – up to 17 years for some species. The nymphs emerge under cover of darkness and are vulnerable as they moult one last time to become adults. These lucky ants have arrived at just the right time – the big-headed soldiers working with the smaller workers to disassemble the cicada alive. Amid the chaos of ants racing over their helpless victim, Lucas composed his shot to tell the dramatic story.

For #IntlForestDay we thought we'd take the opportunity to share last year's #WPY52 grand title winning image taken by photographer Tim Laman. Bornean orangutans are critically endangered, and face habitat loss from agriculture and logging. Tim says, 'Protecting their remaining habitat is critical for orangutans to survive. If we want to preserve a great ape that retains both its vast, culturally transmitted knowledge of how to survive in the rainforest and the full richness of wild orangutan behaviour, then we need to protect orangutans in the wild now.'
