So no big deal but I'm going to be on the Victoria Derbyshire programme today. Tune in 9am, my segment is due at 10:15am approx. I'll be talking about my own feeding experience as well as discussing why I think the new idea of providing monetary vouchers to breastfeeding mothers is an appalling initiative.
Not only will it increase the divide on infant feeding methods, it's albeist (rewards those that have the ability to produce sufficient milk for their baby), and is potentially dangerous for mothers and babies physical and emotional wellbeing.
Being bribed to feed your baby breast milk will not solve the problems with tongue tie, poor latch, insufficient milk supply; just some of the many reasons mothers are unable to successfully breastfeed. The lure of money may even tempt mothers to keep trying to breastfeed even when supply issues are present... running the risk of undernourishment which heightens risks of complications and lifethreating conditions that can develop.
How about we stop putting the responsibility of successful breastfeeding on mothers and put funds towards services, physical help, tongue tie programmes and properly funded maternity leave? I think that would be money well spent.
Photo 1; me not sleeping watching show re-runs in an attempt to calm my nerves.
Photo 2; train cancellations so last one on a packed train. Couldn't even reach the seats for someone to give up theirs if they wanted to. Floor travel it is...
Anyway; wish me luck! And tweet #victoriaLIVE with any messages of support from 10:15 ❤#dontjudgejustfeed #fedisbest #motherhood #breastfeeding #bottlefeeding #uniteinmotherhood
