Last week: "Fair Election Campaign: Small Donor Public Financing Program". Our speaker this evening was Damon Effingham speaking for “Fair Elections Maryland”, a coalition founded to establish small donor campaign finance programs for local and state elections in Maryland. Since being founded, Fair Elections Maryland has worked with Montgomery County and Howard County to establish local small donor campaign finance programs that will be in effect for the 2018 and 2022 elections, respectively. The organization is now working to establish a similar program in Prince George’s County.
The idea is to set up a public fund to match small donations for candidates that agree not to accept “big money” contributions. The intended result is to downgrade the role and influence of large donors in elections and the conflict of interest created for elected candidates by this dependency. Hasn’t happened yet for PG County, but if you want more information and the opportunity to help, visit the coalitions website at: http://www.fairelectionsmaryland.org/
