My grandma is a smart cookie. I always grew up following this advice and I would have probably been a lot smaller if I hadn't. There is conflicting advice on this as some say it is necessary to have some water, but most agree to drink 15 minutes before and 30 minutes after. If you've ever had a refeed meal and then had to tap out after drinking a single glass of water, you will understand how this can affect the precious psychological effect of said meal. Besides, most of the people saying it's ok to drink water with meals are usually sitting in a desk all day and have little muscle to show for. I prefer to listen to people with actual applicable experience of something they recommend. My argument is that if trying to gain mass, drinking water during meals will cause you to be full prematurely and saliva will not have a chance to do its job.
