Panavia Tornado GR1B ZA457 has been reassembled at the @rafmuseum following a gallery redesign to mark the RAF centenary. This airframe was delivered in June 1983 and was one of RAF Bruggen’s Tornado GR1s flown to Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, during the 1991 Gulf War. Named "Bob" after a character from popular TV series Black Adder, ZA457 flew 39 combat missions (including JP233 sorties) during Operation Desert Storm. She was later upgraded to GR1B standard, equipped with the Sea Eagle missile, replaceing the ageing Buccaneer in the maritime strike role. In 1998 ZA457 was back in the skies over Iraq, flown by 12 Squadron crews on 28 combat missions during Operation Desert Fox. She also took part in Operation Bolton in 1999. The Sea Eagle missile was removed from the inventory in 2000 and upgraded (Tornado GR4) airframes meant GR1s not selected for conversion were phased out. ZA457 was retired in March 2002 and transferred to the RAF Museum at Hendon in 2003. She's preserved in 617 Sqn markings, wearing the tail code AJ-J. 🇬🇧 #aviation #aviationlovers #aviationlover #aviationinstagram #aviationphotos #aviationgeek #aircraft #aircraftspotting #aircraftlovers #planes #planefan #planelovers #planefans #airplanes #planespotter #planespotting #avgeek #avgeeks #instagramaviation #militaryaviation #militaryaircraft #warplanes #aviationdaily #tornado #panaviatornado #tonkatuesday #rafmuseum #aviationenthusiast #fastjets

The abundance of aviation history displayed at SYAM never ceases to amaze! This panel came from the tail fin of Panavia Tornado F3 ZG753, and shows the crest of No. 1435 Flight - the striated caracara combined with the Maltese Cross, itself associated with the Sovereign Military Order of St John of Jerusalem. 1435 Flight was formed in Malta in 1941 as a nightfighter unit equipped with Gloster Sea Gladiators named Faith, Hope and Charity. This tradition was retained when 1435 was revived in 1988 as an RAF F-4 Phantom unit defending the Falkland Islands. Aircraft were coded F, H and C after their historic namesakes, with a reserve jet (D for Desperation) added. 1435 later reequipped with the Tornado F3 and currently operates Typhoon. Tornado F3 ZG753 wore the letter H (for Hope). She was built in 1991 and written off in 1997 following an emergency landing on Ascension Island. The jet was returned to the U.K. but was considered beyond economical repair. ZG753 was finally scrapped in 2010, but not before her still serviceable rear fuselage was mated to the front of ZE163, which had been damaged badly in 1999.
