#sundry #decals Toledo.
These chisels are a bit of a mystery and the cause of some debate.
The decal reads Toledo Finest Steel and features a red shield with a white cross, topped with an armour helmet and crossed swords above.
The blade is stamped Toledo Steel Made in Sweden. The handles are birch and in the typically Swedish shape.
The rack is steel and also marked Toledo Finest Steel. The chisel on the right is a Berg ring-in and demonstrates the Swedish appearance of the Toledo chisels.
Galootopia has an online list of Swedish chisel makers which includes Toledo but with no details about where or who made them. There seems to be little evidence for a link to Toledo, Spain nor Toledo, Ohio, home of Max Klinger (and Jamie Farr who played him).
Alternative theories explain why they are often found in Australia. One alleges that they were made in Australia by Coffey Dowidat at North Richmond NSW and the made in Sweden is a marketing gimmick (AKA lie).
Another theory is that they were made in Silverwater, NSW (near Parramatta) by Tridon Australia.
The third, perhaps more likely suggestion, is that the chisels were made in part, or complete, in Sweden for one or other of the Australian sellers.
Certainly the "Swedish Steel" is up there with Sheffield Steel in terms of quality and marketability.
Can any of you shed any light on these tools?
