Tune in on Facebook tomorrow 12:30 pst. My guest will be the artist, Theaster Gates. #livefromthegreatroom #lftgr #theastergates

Part of a series that features lengths of decommissioned fire hoses, #TheasterGates's In Case of Race Riot II alludes to the Civil Rights Movement and, in particular, the use of high-pressure water hoses against peaceful African American demonstrators in Birmingham, Alabama, in May 1963. However, the wording of the title raises the possibility of future use of the fire hose, questioning any complacent acceptance of the success of this tumultuous era of American history and pointing to the ongoing struggles for African Americans’ civil rights. Explore the legacy of lynching through artists like Gates @brooklynmuseum through September 3.⠀

The reconstructed @minneapolissculpturegarden and expanded Walker campus officially reopens three weeks from today on Saturday June 3. Seen here is the construction of a new commission from Chicago-based artist #TheasterGates. This will mark his first permanent outdoor commission. Taking the form of a tempietto, a small circular Renaissance temple, the structure will serve as both a passageway and a secular-sacred sanctuary for the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. The exterior of the structure seen here, stands more than 20 feet tall, and is composed of custom-made black bricks, made from recycled materials, that embody Gates’s ethos of transforming humble, everyday materials. The interior of the structure will be home to a salvaged statue of Saint Laurence—the patron saint of librarians and archivists—which will have traveled from Chicago to Venice, Italy, and Bregenz, Austria, before finding its final resting place in Minneapolis.

The Nasher is proud to announce Theaster Gates is the 2018 Nasher Prize Laureate. The Nasher Prize is the most ambitious international award in sculpture, established to honor a living artist who elevates the understanding of the field and its possibilities. Gates was selected by an international jury and is an American artist with a practice that incorporates sculpture, painting, music, performance, architecture, urban planning, and social engagement. He fuses a traditional sculptural training with materials that reify, archive, and memorialize the black American experience. Gates’ method of using architecture, music, extant archives, and human interaction as content for his work creates dynamic ecosystems wherein everything—from the objects that he creates to the orchestrated exchange of ideas within communal space—is part of his sculptural practice. #TheasterGates #NasherPrize #NasherSculptureCenter

Adams’s Future People solo exhibition is a multifaceted experience combining large scale two dimensional works on paper mimicking spaceship windows with galactic scenes, a video projection animating the objects included in the collages, sculpture installation referencing a space station control center with an added live DJ set component featured opening night and throughout the run of show. The installation as a space for social engagement will also be a haven for public programming; film screenings, conversations and entertainment surrounding the theme of exhibition.
This exhibition will utilizes Stony Island Arts Bank's archive by incorporating or make reference to images, music and text from Johnson Publishing publisher of Ebony and Jet magazine, University of Chicago Glass Lantern Slides: Art and Architectural history from the Paleolithic to Modern eras Edward J. Williams Collection objects of “negrobilia and Frankie Knuckles Records: “Godfather of House Music,” Frankie Knuckles’ vinyl collection with a focus on the past, present and future ideas depicting black culture’s long interests in futurism and it’s roots to Africa. The installations as a whole imagines the future as a place of discovery and adventure. The driving concept for this installation is inspired by Sun Ra’s “Space Is The Place” documentary, and the television series, Star Trek. It also acknowledges the AfroFuturism movement fusing elements of Sci Fi and the African American narrative with contemporary culture.
