🤦‍♂️Forums, Facebook groups, articles from bigbootybabes, - there is info everywhere. Trying to decipher it all can make you go a bit insane.
~
💆‍♂️Over the last 17 years - 10 years of coaching professionally, you get to see where the good info comes from. You also get to see where to roll your eyes and move on.
~
😴I’ll admit - some of the material isn’t exactly like watching GoT (it was amazing, go see it), and has put me to sleep - even though I love learning everything I can about fitness, health, and nutrition.
~
😬Here are some of the books I have in my “second Library” that I was milling over recently.

❓So where do I learn?
~
👉Lyle McDonald - His books, along with his forums/FB group, are highly valuable to me. Bodyrecomposition is where to find them. 👉Eric Helms - His “Muscle and Strength Pyramid” books are some of the best info you can possibly have - and they’re very up to date.
👉Dan John - his books, predominantly “never let go” really shaped a lot of my current views, and is great for getting your head wrapped around “what works”
👉Bret Contreras - ladies, if you haven’t heard of “the Glute Guy” yet, you should. I’ve seen him present in person, and not only if the info legit, but it’s entirely backed by science.
👉Alan Aragon - his news letter, Alan Aragon Research Review, pumps out new studies on nutrition with as much non-bias as possible. It’s a *bit* heavy on the science, but if you’re into that - sign up. It’s worth the $.
👉Brad Schoenfeld - one of the few (only?) guys putting out scientific evidence on what actually grows muscle, and not just “gym talk”. His book “Science and Development of Muscle Hypertrophy” is a must read.

😎For my throwback Thursday, here’s me when one of my client’s brought me back the A&W Pop tarts from the USA when they were released about 2 years ago.
~
💁‍♂️The second photo is from when I had my office as a personal trainer around 2012 (swipe left).

🤔“Are those actual pop tart boxes?”
😐“You don’t really eat pop tarts, do you?”
😲“Is it true that your clients only eat pop tarts?”
😡“That’s so unhealthy. You’re an idiot.”

🤟🏻When rumours got out that I was putting pop tarts on my client’s nutrition plans, starting around 2010, I heard it all.
~
👀I had people come in to my office just to see if “Pop Tart Mountain” was real. I had people emailing me, asking if I worked for Kellogg’s.
~
😁And once - just once - I was buying pop tarts at Save On Foods, and the cashier said “HEY! You’re the pop tart guy! I follow you on Facebook!!!”
~
👍Yes, I implemented pop tarts into a lot of my client’s plans. I still do.
~
🤓Yes, I am a contest prep coach that is science based, who hasn’t had any clients become type 2 diabetics while being coached by me.
~
❓So why? Why the pop tarts? What’s with the pop tarts? What is so magical about pop tarts? Will I become mega if I eat pop tarts? When do I eat them? Can I eat pop tarts too? Can I get shredded while eating pop tarts? Come on, you must at *least* be sponsored by pop tarts???

😫Do you know when to switch your training for cutting?

💪Low to medium reps for bulking
💃Super ultra mega high reps for cutting
🏋️‍♂️Only compound lifts for bulking
🤸‍♀️Only specialized isolation lifts for cutting

🙅‍♂️There aren’t any magic fat burning exercises. Fat/calories are burned by a caloric deficit. You can do this predominantly through your diet, and/or increasing your activity levels.
~
☝️There also aren’t any “must do” exercises for muscle gain. Some will be better suited for you, but doing solely the compound exercises ? It could leave some of your lagging body parts behind, leading to an unbalanced physique.
~
🥊If you’ve been using a sound workout program, training with intensity, at times using progressive resistance (doing a couple more reps or more weight on exercises from workout to workout), with a mix of compound and isolation exercises - you’ll gain and build muscle. You’ll also want to be in a caloric surplus.
~
✂️Then, it comes time to cut. You’ll hear of people switching all of their workouts to circuits, plyometrics, supersets, and predominantly isolation exercises.
~
❌Don’t do that.
~
🤔If you’ve spent time training correctly (as stated above)…what do you think built the muscle?
~
⚠️Switching to the “classic cutting” workouts is turning your weight training sessions into glorified cardio bootcamp sessions. Not only will the calories you burn be pretty equivalent to that of your “bulking” workouts, but now you run a huge risk of losing the hard earned muscle you spent all that time building.
~
🤪This isn’t me saying “Never change your workouts” - this is me saying “Changing everything can, and will, change everything”
~
😞And it won’t be in the way you want.
~
