Our māori word of the week is tarākona / dragon for the much-loved icon of our KidZone playground – Cedric the dragon! 🐉
A firm favourite of kiwi kids for generations, Cedric will be turning sixty-years-old next year!
This mighty dragon was built by former zoo groundsman Cedric Storey as a way to cover an old kauri stump and this labour of love took him two years to complete.
Dragon comes from the latin ‘draco’ which means ‘huge serpent’ and although Cedric is more of a western depiction of a dragon, Māori pūrākau and tradition has many stories of taniwha - strong water creatures who were often guardians and protectors of sacred places and represented the mana of the people.
