Our māori word of the week is arewhana-Āhia / Asian elephant, for our precious pachyderms Anjalee and Burma! 🐘 ⠀
Did you know that we have a keeper talk with our elephants each day of the week?! This is a chance for you to meet our elephant keepers and watch them perform a quick health check by having our elephants open their mouths wide and lift their legs so we can check their feet! If it’s a sunny day, our elephant pair may also go for a dip in their pool.⠀
Sadly these beautiful animals are globally endangered and face serious threats in the wild such as habitat fragmentation and loss due to an ever-expanding human population. Auckland Zoo Conservation Fund is a partner of the Biodiversity & Elephant Conservation Trust in Sri Lanka and is part of an education and awareness programme in schools to decrease the levels of human-elephant conflicts (HEC).⠀
You can help by visiting Anjalee and Burma or by making a donation to our Conservation Fund and the wonderful work being done to help elephants and communities. Together we can make a difference!
