Today's message: Rest in Purpose This Year
The Bible verse for today is from John 10:10, The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.
Who wants what you have? What I have? If we think about it in material possessions then maybe some of us might say, 'Well, no one,' and then again some of us might say, 'Well, everyone.' Sometimes we can live (see) our lives in the material and not in the eternal. But God tells us over in Matthew 6:33 to seek eternal over material because He knows what we need in the truest sense of abundance.
The thief only comes to misdirect and devour our perception of what and where abundant living is truly found. And the thief does it with teeth too, 1 Peter 5:8. He has a purpose. But, and this is an all caps B-U-T, so does Jesus. With the complete fullness of purpose and life.
And so the bigger question becomes, “Who wants to give you, me, more than we will ever need?” In this verse Jesus unpacks purpose. There's the thief's present purpose. And his own, both now and without end.
And He also tells us in verse 9, “I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.” There are persons and things that cannot overtake those who have come into the freedom of Christ, the abundant living we have in him no matter the circumstance, John 16:33.
We in God live assuredly in security because we lay everyday life and treasures in heaven...'where thieves do not break in and steal, Matthew 6:20. What Jesus has been given, you and I, he lets not a one of us be snatched and delivered over to the thief, John 10:29. You and I can go and come because Jesus came. And as his sheep we can work, play, endure, and rest in green pastures because of the eternal goodness and the abundant living we have in his shepherding.
