I had a great holiday but I could not help but feel disturbed by the race relations in South Africa. Coming from the mouths of people who I spoke to, the racial division is so explicit and hierarchical- placing white people at the top. You can see how this manifests through housing, jobs and income inequality. Whilst I was there I learnt more about the Apartheid era and the country’s diverse history/ cultures. I didn’t know that during apartheid there were TONS of laws that were created to systematically dehumanize blacks in all aspects of life, especially the Bantu people. It sickens me how in school I was taught that Apartheid was merely just the separation of people on the basis of race. The remnants of Apartheid still exists in SA and until land/resources redistribution is a topic of discussion then there’s not much else to talk about.
