Van Gogh actually saw a light at the end of the tunnel⠀

On show for the first time since its first cleaning in nearly 100 years, this picture of an underpass in Asnieres, Paris, was painted by van Gogh at the start of his career and before his move to the South, and for many years looked very bleak, as the tunnel at its centre was a black void. With the light at the end of the tunnel now visible following a restoration project by the Solomon R Guggenheim Museum team in New York, the restored picture is making its debut at Guggenheim Bilabao’s blockbuster new show ‘Van Gogh to Picasso. The Thannhauser Legacy’, which brings nearly fifty works by Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, and early modern masters including Paul Cézanne, Edgar Degas, Édpyard Manet, Pablo Picasso and Vincent Van Gogh. ⠀
