It’s St. George’s Day, Shakespeare’s birthday and the birthday of a new royal baby. April 23rd must be a special date.

100% of the Shakespeare I own is for children (apart from the odd sonnet in a poetry anthology). I’m not sure why I don’t have any ‘adult’ Shakespeare. At school I read Macbeth, Anthony and Cleopatra and Twelfth Night but don’t seem to own any copies. Perhaps we used school ones?

Which is your favourite of Shakespeare’s works? Which ones did you study at school?

"All the world's a stage." —William Shakespeare

Hamlet was the first play that I read by Shakespeare. I am sure most of you have heard of it if not read. It is one of Shakespeare's many masterpieces. You can not stop but marvel at the skill of the language used and the sheer wit he has infused his plays with. The intricate expression and manner in which he has portrayed his characters makes people relate to them even after centuries. The word of admiration has it that it seems like each character actually came down to write his/her own dialogues and there can not be just one person behind all of them. Such is the articulation and this is what makes his works thoroughly scintillating. As one of my teachers said today, "You can not shake Shakespeare from the centre of the canon. He is there and will remain there forever." I could not agree more.

Happy Shakespeare Day to all. Also Happy World Book Day. A very literary day indeed.

P.S. Swipe to watch me receiving a certificate from the chairperson who I absolutely fell in love with. I participated in one of the comic plays and my role was a very minor one (no roles were left by the time I got to know about the event) but it was great to be a part of it nonetheless. I played Hippolyta from A Mid Summer Night's Dream. Everyone was so brilliant up there it was all utter pleasure.
I had to spend ten hours at the university in the hot because I had classes later and I do not think I can explain how exhausted I feel right now.

“It is not in the Stars to hold our Destiny but in ourselves” (Julius Caesar)

In 1616, the great bard died on this day, snuffing out one of the brightest stars in the literary sky.

It’s also though that he was born on this day in 1564, although the exact date of his birth was not recorded.

#throwbacks aren’t just for #thursdays - these two #reimaginings of #shakespearesplays (#hamlet and #thetempest - my two all time favourite Shakespeare plays and I have been fortunate enough to teach them for A-Level) are well worth a #read - even if #shakespeare isn’t your thing - #ianmcewan and #margaretatwood are, in my opinion, two of the #greatest #writers of our #time - highly recommend these two #stellar novels! #shelfindulgent #throwbackwednesday #nutshell #hagseed #shakespeareretold

Margaret Atwood’s retelling of Shakespeare’s The Tempest is accessible, engaging and entertaining.

That said I am not especially familiar with the original play, not having read any Shakespeare since high school.

The Hogarth Shakespeare Project see’s Shakespeare’s work retold by acclaimed and bestselling contemporary novelists. Included in the series is Gillian Flynn (Hamlet) and Jo Nesbo (Macbeth).

Also this was my first Atwood, first of many!

Let’s face it, young people aren’t always enthralled by the idea of studying #Shakespeare and most dread the thought of it. This evening we were thrilled to see a hilarious take on #romeoandjuliet which would be perfect for#gcseenglishliterature and #alevelliterature pupils. In fact if you’re an avid reader of #shakespearesplays and enjoy #theatre catch this wonderful production @batterseaartscentre we were in stitches for the most part of the evening but don’t be fooled, there’s a serious undertone to this too. As with other Shakespearean plays, the much-loved (and oft quoted) Hamlet has its roots in medieval legend, particularly that of the Danish prince Amlothi or Amleth. The name is said to mean “desperate in battle” (implying a hint of madness) or “simpleton”, and while the Amleth of the play is certainly the former, he is also vastly more ‘simple’ in purpose than his later stage incarnation. His story comes to us in the third book of Saxo Grammaticus’s Historia Danica (c.1200, printed in 1514), and features roughly the same plot as the ‘modern’ Hamlet: Amleth‘s uncle King Feng murders Amleth’s father Horwendil and marries his mother Gerutha. Amleth feigns insanity and is sent to England, where he ensures that his ‘Rosencrantz and Guildenstern’ are killed in place of him. He then returns to Denmark where he burns his uncle’s hall (filled with his uncle and nobles) to the ground. The latter part of his story differs, however, with Shakespeare: after this, Amleth departs again for England, where he has married the king’s daughter. However, he is then tricked into going to Scotland, where the Scottish queen falls for him and he makes her a second wife. With both wives in tow, he returns to Jutland and finds that an upstart named Wiglek has deposed his mother. In the ensuing battle, Amleth is slain by Wiglek. Besides the obvious differences in plot, the Danish Amleth is markedly more bloody and vengeful than the brooding Hamlet. No soliloquies for him: when confronted with a ‘Polonius’ character, he boils him and feeds him to the pigs. A beautiful courtesan sent to trap the prince is raped by him before his flight to England. On one point both Amleth and Hamlet might agree: “O, from this time forth, My thoughts be bloody, or be nothing worth!” •
