Interestingly, many women from different parts of India went bare breasted under their saris before the British rule, a time when tight corsets & crinolines were part of a European woman’s uniform. They were shocked by the 'immodesty' of Indian women gallivanting bare-boobie and introduced the blouse to the sari.
The original draping of a sari did not even require a blouse & petticoat; the first fold was to be held in place simply by knotting one end of the fabric around the waist.
