Lateral raises are a big exercise used by many to grow a wider frame and improve their deltoid shape. However it is often done incorrectly with momentum and incorrect position of the elbow and tempo of the reps.
.
I am using only 10lbs in this tutorial and really focusing on mind to muscle connection of the lateral head. Often times we strive to lateral raise heavy loads thinking the heavier it is the more it will work and grow, however we often compensate the load with our traps, triceps, and forearms way more than our side delt we want working.🤔

Here I am working with and coached by my good friend @beyond.the.iron on improving my lateral raise form to grow the side delts!🔥💪🏼

SIDE RAISES ☝🏻

There are so many conflicting opinions on this exercise. You’ll find many fitness professionals tell you to “turn your wrist in like you are pouring water” or “lead with the elbow not the wrist” 🤔
.
For me, the side raise will always revolve around the moment arm. This is simply the length between where the weight is distributed and the joint that performs the action 🤓
.
The exercise is harder with your arm kept straight because there is more tension and stress through the muscle and the joint 😬
.
It is easier, and you can lift more weight when you shorten the moment arm by bending the elbow.
.
As I stated in the video I would recommend using both approaches so you can overload the muscle in different ways, leaving no stone unturned 👌🏻 I generally perform heavier sets with a bent elbow on upper body strength days and lighter more controlled sets on hypertrophy days 🙌🏻

Sometimes you've got to focus on the quality of rep and not worry about what your face is doing 🙃
Prefer cable lateral raises over dumbbells due to the constant tension on the muscle with the cables
The downside is that the increments in which the weight goes up are larger compared to the dumbbells in my gym, making progressive overload (slightly) more difficult
Ultimately the best variation is the one you as the individual prefer the most
