Breath of Life Team Jamaica Makes the 2018 Mission Possible 🚑❤️ This summer, Team Jamaica from Breath of Life (BOL) church served at the Good Samaritan Inn (GSI) in Kingston, Jamaica. GSI is operated under the leadership of the East Jamaica Conference (EJC) and offers hot meals, showers, and medical and dental services.
.
GSI’s vision includes expanding its services to care for women and children who are victims of domestic violence. “The privilege of sharing and implementing this vision enriched the team’s resolve to continue its commitment to help those in need,” said team leader and BOL member Glenda LeFlore-Steward.

The Universal Question, by Megan Elmendorf — from the Living God's Love blog on Adventistfaith.com
.
The universal question "Why do bad things happen to good people?" came up as I was teaching my senior religion class. It was expressed by a second generation Adventist and not (as one might expect) from one of the international students. A follow-up question was then asked by a born-again Christian, "And why do good things happen to bad people?" In response, we discussed once more the great controversy, and then the discussion turned to such biblical truths as those found in Matthew 5:44-46 and 2 Peter 3:9, homing in on the fact that the God we serve is a relational God—a God who, as Creator of both the "good" and the "bad," seeks that both may know Him and that both may have equal opportunity for salvation (Romans 3:21-24). . .

My Friend’s House Provides a Safe Place to Grow in Santa Clarita 🏫 How does a church provide special needs kids with a place to feel safe and to grow? The Santa Clarita church has found the answer in a special needs children’s ministry called My Friend’s House. Special needs teacher Delmy Calderon has been hired by the church to teach every Sabbath morning and during VBS week.
.
“The reason I got involved initially was to offer something more to one family with a son who has autism and Down syndrome,” said Linda Scotto, a church elder who also serves as the church’s family ministry director and Primary Sabbath School teacher.

At Holbrook Indian School, students are encouraged academically, physically, and spiritually. Students' overall health is important to faculty, which is why the school recently introduced the NEW (Nutrition, Exercise, Wellness) You Health Initiative. As part of this initiative, the school is teaching students about mental health, academic achievement, physical health, and spiritual growth. They're calling these four health pillars MAPS—each a fundamental component of a student’s environment and education with specific, practical applications.
.
HIS seeks to minister to the whole person by teaching students how to improve every dimension of their lives.

Have you spent time at summer camp? The young people in these photos did, and their smiling faces say it all.
.
This summer at Camp Wai`anae, counselors shared God’s love with campers. Along with serving the campers from the church communities around Oahu, the staff had the opportunity to minister to kids from many different walks of life across the islands. Thanks to generous donors, 53 kids displaced by the Kilauea volcano’s lava flow were able to experience a week of camp. Many of them had no idea what to expect when they arrived at Camp Wai’anae. At the end of Adventure Camp, several of these kids talked about loving the bunk beds, the food, and the staff.
.
Camp counselor Jeff Bradburn hopes that church members will continue to make ministry to young people a priority, including the work at Camp Wai’anae. “Keep supporting youth ministry, keep pouring into young adults,” he said. “The youth aren’t the future; they’re the present—present leaders, present seekers, agents of change in this world that is hungry for meaning. And whatever you do, don’t miss out on an opportunity to journey alongside a young person and let the Holy Spirit do the rest.”

The Walking Dead, by Delroy Brooks — from the Living God's Love blog on Adventistfaith.com
.
A few years ago, I began to notice a strange preoccupation with the dead. Not exactly the dead, but those who are thought of as “the living dead,” otherwise known as zombies. Zombies are alive, but have no life. They are animate creatures that are limited in their abilities and functions. In every iteration of this popular horror movie trope, zombies must feed on others in order to remain animate. The protagonists in these stories are usually running for their lives and trying to find a cure for zombism. For five seasons, one of the most popular shows on TV has been “The Walking Dead.” It features both those who have been made dead and those who are left alive.
.
There are many movies that deal with this subject matter to varying degrees. The sort of thing that used to scare you as a child has now become a part of popular culture. But before any of these movies, TV shows, or comic books were made, Paul told his own zombie story in the second chapter of Ephesians. Are you ready to hear it? It is the stuff of late night sleepovers and campfire tales. This story has a very familiar main character: you—yes, you!

Central California Conference of Seventh-day Adventists (CCC) celebrated the 138th session of its Soquel Camp Meeting and the 70th anniversary of the event at its current location, the Soquel Conference Center. This year’s theme was “His Word Shaping Our Story.”
.
Nearly 4,000 people at more than 1,100 campsites registered throughout the week, and more than 10,000 were in attendance each Sabbath.
.
As a salute to Soquel’s legacy, the daily television broadcast segments featured historians, retro black and white video openers, and a voiceover from the late George Vandeman, keynote speaker at the 1948 meetings. In addition, John Leopold, first district supervisor for Santa Cruz County, provided a video tribute to Adventism within Santa Cruz, California County.
.
“This year’s camp meeting was very special,” said Ramiro Cano, CCC president. “Of the last 20 I have participated in, this will go down as one of the most profound, inspiring experiences for me personally. I thank the Lord for the many dedicated hands that came together to make this annual event a reality.”

Spanish American Church and Math Academy Program Add Up to a Successful Outreach 📊 In July, the Spanish American church in East Los Angeles held its second annual Math Academy tutoring program. “We had great success last year,” said Mario Melendez, Spanish American church community services director. “We are the only program of this kind in the community, and 35 children from grades 1-9 attended this summer. Twenty of the 35 kids were from the community.”
.
The program is sponsored by the Brighton Foundation, which pays for the cost of the tutors. Seven tutors were supported by the program this year—all of them college students or graduates of a four-year university. An additional nine high school students volunteered. “I’m so glad I can help them. I love math!” said Angel Orduno, grades 8-9 tutor.

After over 40 years of preaching sermons, baptizing, and sharing the gospel, Randy Barlow has retired from pastoral ministry. Barlow, who served at conferences in both the Pacific Union and North Pacific Union, feels grateful to have experienced what he considers the biggest blessing of his life: a journey in ministry.
.
Barlow's congregations appreciated his active participation in church activities, such as outdoor trips and local outreach efforts, and said they also felt blessed by his leadership. “He encouraged the church’s talents and leadership. He trusted us and empowered us to do the work,” said Nina Harris, secretary for the Quincy church. “Through his Christ-like and humble example, he brought us closer to Christ.”
.
Barlow retired in mid-July. After over four decades in God’s service, he is looking forward to seeing what God has planned next. His journey in ministry has convinced him that God’s plans are the best ones.

Covered in Forgiveness—by Ray Tetz
From the Living God's Love blog
.
The first Bible I remember belonging to me personally was not too big, but certainly not small—regular "book size." Its cover was blue leatherette and zippered with a little cross on the zipper pull, so you always knew if your Bible was open or closed. There were rules for this Bible. It was important, for instance, to keep it zippered shut when you weren’t reading it. And also to make sure there was never anything stacked on top of it. Never. Anything. Ever.
.
I’m sure the words "Holy Bible" were etched on the cover, which also featured a picture of two people shaking hands with the additional words, "Friendship Edition." The hands pictured were clearly adult, signifying that this was a grown-up Bible, not like the big print, picture-intensive Bibles that little kids carried. This was my grown-up Bible.

Working for His Soon Return: University Church Celebrates 110 Years 🙌 On Aug. 8-12, members and friends of the Southern California Conference’s University church in Los Angeles recognized the congregation’s 110th anniversary. “It was a time of celebration, beginning on Wednesday evening and concluding with a wonderful concert on Sabbath evening,” said Royal Harrison, Greater Los Angeles Region director. “There was powerful preaching, inspiring music, and testimonies from the past that reminded everyone of how good God has been to His people.”
.
On Sabbath, 450 attendees gathered for worship. The divine service featured a message from Israel Olaore, Glendale Adventist Academy principal. The weekend was filled with music by Inspiration, a University church reunion group and the church’s mass choir. Closing out the celebration, members enjoyed a family picnic on Sunday.
