I was warned away from this book a couple of times, but I'm surprised to say I enjoyed it.
That isn't to say anyone's criticisms are wrong though, the odd pacing, the restrained story arc, and the slightly lackluster murder mystery are all there, I just enjoyed it anyways.
While there are a lot of mediocre elements I find the characters were really worth reading through for.
I'm also glad it is going to be made into a movie, as that does mean that maybe they will fix those off elements.
My biggest problem with this book was probably how it never seemed to go entirely in on anything. When I was picking it up I was really hoping for a closed environment where the stakes get higher because they are so secluded, which really wasn't the case. I also hoped for an extreme collection of characters who would really push the awkward levels as high as they would go. But honestly, for a thriller book these characters were a little too realistic for me.
I know that must sound wild, but I really enjoy how thrillers are made to really push out the most intense parts of people, but I never really felt that here. In fact the environment which was really my draw to the book, was pushed to the sidelines as well. Making this book feel much less like a dense atmospheric thriller than I had hoped for.
Even in the climax, where things are meant to be pushed to their most intense, everyone felt almost absurdly reasonable.
And I know, I said the characters were what saved it for me, and they were, but honestly it was one character who saved it for me. Nina.
I liked her in the beginning but it took until she interacted with her partner Jess for me to really love her. Mostly because those two reminded me so deeply of me and my wife.
So on the queer representation front I really enjoyed it. The characters were believable and deeply relatable for me. **spoilers** no burying of gays either **spoilers** I won't say it is the best book I have read, but if you want a page turner this will do you just fine. 👣👣👣(3/5 sets of footprints)
