THERE IS GENIUS IN REPETITION.
I’ve laid out Menlo wrappers to begin a new set of lumpia wrapping. I’ve wrapped thousands of lumpia with all the catering I’ve done. I’ve rolled as much as 600 in one session— both lumpia shanghai and mixed vegetable. With the high volume I have to produce, lumpia wrapping can often start off as a daunting task. However, over the years I have developed my own best practices for an efficient process.
What I have found over time is that what would start out as a laborious job, would in fact turn out to be a task of meditative nature. Rolling one lumpia after another came with ease like a boat sailing on calm waters. This is the genius of repetitive action.
If we do something consistently and repeatedly, we become masters of that task. What is even greater is that we change as a result of that repetition. We become centered and focused.
The same concept applies to repetitive prayer. If you are Buddhist and chant Om Mani Padme Hum, after ten minutes you will feel the serenity and healing powers from the rhythm of this ancient script. If you are Catholic and cite the rosary, the reiteration of the prayer beads will have you feel the divine comfort of knowing your prayers are being heard beyond this earthly world. Hinduism too has a plethora of mantras in word and sound repeated to create concentration and the unity of mind and spirit.
It is inevitable through a recurring act we increase in skill and awareness. We find deeper purpose, greater value in what we are doing and we discover more love for ourselves.
